Beats was just purchasing a demographic image. 3 billion for that? Yeah, it probably won’t go down in history as a sound business decision, but when you have people like the folks running Tidal using elementary school tactics to incite the uninformed -you have to do something. So they did. Maybe not the best move, but a committed and agile one. And it has been effective. Perhaps not equitably so considering the expense paid, but it seems it has totally quelled the childish attacks from those in the Demographics that had complaints - and turned them into customers instead.
Of course an entirely Apple branded and developed fresh move would have like done the same with the addition of some fresh public faces.
But we are where we are and Apple seems to have won with that move.
Lovine was an opportunist. Don’t think he helped much.
Still the move reinforces Apple as a serious and committed, yet unconventional culture. “Stay hungry, stay foolish” per Jobs. I think that served them well here and will continue to down the long road.
You are right that Apple was purchasing a demographic which to me is sad and not Steve Jobs like at all.
Iovine and Dre were dead weight and they should've never been given any kind of advisory role at Apple.
Apple should never have purchased Beats. They didn’t need it to stand up a streaming music service.
I'm sure Beats has already paid itself. Last I checked, Beats made 1 Billion a year on hardware alone. Now Apple gets a bigger cut on an already hot selling item in their stores, gets W1 and Apples headphone-jack-less philosophy to the masses faster, gets a pre-built music service that could have taken 2 years to build, and gets employees who run the music industry.... for only 3b!! Google would have paid 12.5b for this!

...
Are we forgetting here that Iovine and Dre were running a highly successful streaming business BEFORE Apple purchased them? I remember Beats Music being consistently on the top 25 apps and sometimes in the top 10 for months! They were friggin' #2 in streaming popularity!!
They work their tails off and do you think now they are just laying back drinking lemonade? Iovine basically has your favorite artists' numbers in his contacts list and many execs, music moguls etc. We DO NOT know what Dre and Iovine are doing right now so why do we speculate they are doing nothing? Iovine is a master talent scout and deal-closer. Most likely this new Apple Music hire was hired by Iovine.
P.S. Beats audio is getting into the car space. Now Apple can make money on 3rd party autos too.

Iovine ... “eye-oh-veen.” That is a capital I, not an L in his name. I also believe he was friends with Jobs years before the beats deal. He helped to try and get other producers to sell individual songs on iTunes. Take a close look at what Steve is wearing..like them or not the beats acquisition I believe wasn't just some deal Cook and Eddie Cue thought was good idea for Apple..

I thought about this after I posted. Steve was friends with both Iovine and Dre.

Steve Jobs was super tight with both Iovine and Dre. Need some proof? Here's a fucking video with Jobs video chatting with Dr. Dre at the iTunes launch in 2003. Iovine pitched a subscription music service to Jobs as early as 2004. He also was responsible for getting U2 in early iPod ads, is that purchasing a demographic and sad and not-Steve-Jobs-like?
“Steve called me one night before he passed. Must have been eight months before he passed,” Iovine told me during an interview at his home in Los Angeles this past March 17. On that call, Iovine continued, Jobs told him ‘‘’you know, you’re one of the few people--if not the only person--who came out of software and made a piece of hardware successfully.’”
“I’ve been meeting with Apple about subscriptions since 2004,” when Iovine was CEO of Interscope Records. “Every two months. I think they’re an incredible company, and I wanted them to do subscriptions.”
“I think they have the platform to do it. They have 400 million credit cards, an audience that likes music. And they have, y’know, iTunes!”

Dude, no need for the personal attacks, just block him if he irritates you so much.
Also, I cannot forgive Iovine for influencing the UI of the iOS Music app (at least I think it was him based on his public statements and presentation). The whole “what song is playing next” BS led to some of the worst design usability decisions for the software at Apple. I’m convinced no one there actually uses this crummy app.

They're a she, but regardless — to me it's just sport when someone continually beats a dead horse over and over and over and over yet completely ignores facts and everyone else's rational arguments that disprove whatever FUD they keep repeating in the forums for years. I'll respectfully retract the personal bit as it doesn't add to the discussion. But seriously, come on.
I don't really have any issues with the current iteration of Music. It went through some growing pains for sure, but I think it's in a better spot than it has been for a while. I like the Up Next functionality.

To each their own, I guess. I'd gladly abandon "Up Next" for the ability to set EQ and volume levels for each song individually... and have them actually SAVED.

Huh. I would be willing to bet that somewhere around 99% of people would never care about that feature, yet most people are happy to have an on-the-fly playlist (Up Next). Not that there can't be both, but that's some micromanaging stuff right there. Were you ever able to do that?

"What would Steve do?"
Probably buy Beats.
GET. OVER. IT.
