Samsung has launched the Portable SSD X5, the first NVMe-based external drive of its type from the company, with the compact storage device boasting high transfer speeds thanks to its Thunderbolt 3 connectivity and fast memory.

Samsung Portable SSD X5

The Samsung Portable SSD X5 is claimed to be ideal for those wanting fast and convenient data storage, including content creators working on 4K video projects and compiling high-resolution photographs.

Taking advantage of the high-speed nature of NVMe, as well as the 40 gigabit-per-second bandwidth offered by Thunderbolt 3, the drive offers a read speed of up to 2,800 megabytes per second, which is said by Samsung to be 5.2 times faster than storing to portable SSDs with a SAT interface, and 25.5 times faster than normal external hard drives. Write speeds are also extremely fast at 2,300 megabytes per second, allowing for a 20-gigabyte 4K UHD video to be transferred to the drive in just 12 seconds.

Samsung also offers the ability to store data securely on the drive with AES 256-bit hardware encryption, with its accompanying software allowing for the drive to be password protected while secured, among other security settings.

To prevent overheating while in use, it also includes "Dynamic Thermal Guard technology, described as a mechanical cooling solution with a heatsink.

The device is compact and light, weighing in at 5.3 ounces and measuring 4.7 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.8 inches. The housing itself has a glossy full-metal body and a non-slip bottom mat, while a shock-resistant internal frame and the rugged housing helps protect it from drops of up to 6.6 feet in height.

Shipping from September 3, the Portable SSD X5 will start from $399.99 for the 500-gigabyte model, rising to $699.99 for the 1-terabyte version, and $1,399.99 for 2 terabytes. It is compatible with both Macs and Windows PCs with Thunderbolt 3 ports, requiring either macOS 10.12 or later, or on the Windows side, Windows 10 64-bit RS2 or higher.

Both B&H Photo and Amazon are accepting preorders for the Portable SSD X5 on a first come, first served basis.

I use Samsung SSD’s in my gaming rigs. They’re fast and reliable.

Funny how they can’t get NVMe into their phones when Apple has had it for 2 years now.

Perhaps a Galaxy Note 8 burned his previous home to the ground.

Wow I can’t wait for these SSD drives to get cheap, it will definitely make life easier having that kind of speed but that price is just crazy expensive. One day they will be as cheap any regular hard drive just have to wait it out.

I’ve used the Samsung T3 & T5 drives and they are great. At the risk of using a trigger word, the T3 & T5 have been great for Pro graphic & photo editing. Seems these are a bit larger, but if the speed improvement is significant it might be worth a bit larger size.

    • The high sustained Read speed of 2400MB/s and Write speed of 1200MB/s ensures that your data is transferred faster so that you can get going sooner.
Not quite as fast, but a much better deal.

I think this drive will only be useful for Pro users who want to edit very high demanding tasks like 4K or higher RAW footage straight from an external SSD.
Or of course, anyone who transfers massive amounts of data back and forth every day.
    Fairly small market.

The rest of us won't mind waiting a half an hour longer if we can save $300-500 on a regular SSD drive.

    There's also this:

2TB drive with pretty fast 850/850 transfer speeds.

Half the price of Samsung's 2TB X5 drive.

the 500Gb model seems rather expensive.
There is a Samsung 500Gb NVME on Amazon.co.uk for £149 inc VAT (approx $150 USD not inc Tax)
That $399 price is a hefty markup for a case + Interface IMHO.

I have the SanDisk SDSSDE60-500G-G25 ($127 at Amazon). Works great and I like the grippy case. It does feel warm most of the time and I haven’t pushed it to see if it ever gets truly hot. Can’t beat the price and better than any large capacity thumb drive I’ve ever had.

Good of Samsung to come to the party but how’s this any better than the TB2/3 products www.barefeats.com has been benchmarking for years?

I thought my Glyph RAID SSD was fast but this Samdung smokes it (except for price).

http://barefeats.com/hard231.html  is the latest but he’s nuts on the subject of storage.  If you email Rob he’ll probably get one and update the shootout.  Not sure Samsung is the first NVMe/TB3 as claimed.

It writes and reads at a much slower rate from Mac, according to this article. Jonny https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-portable-ssd-x5-nvme-thunderbolt-3,5779.html
