I've got a 16GB 6th gen that was left over from a project at work that I keep in an old speaker. I only have a couple apps on it. I mostly just use it for Apple Music and occasionally I'll use Safari to look something up if I'm near it and don't have my phone on me.
I just went to use it the other day and noticed the battery has expanded causing the screen to split away from the body. I looked up how to replace it myself but it involves soldering unlike battery swaps on the iPhone. Apple charges $80 to replace an iPod battery. I'm going to check a few local shops and see what they would charge but if they're going to charge more than $20-30 bucks it might be, sadly, time to decommission my last iPod.
That happened to my 5s. Took it to the Apple Store and they gave me a brand new 5s (we’ll likely refurbished) for the price of the battery. You should make an appointment with an Apple Store to see what they will do. Once the battery expands like that, it damages internal components, and they can’t just replace the battery anymore. Might be worth it for a brand new unit to keep around for a while longer.
Strangely, I never bought an iPod Touch, despite my perchance for buying at least one of each Apple product! The last iPod I bought was the 160 GB iPod Classic. It served me very well and is still in top condition, as is my first Apple purchase - the 3rd generation iPod.
With the iPhone now sporting 256GB, the iPod Classic is taking a long break!
I’ve always been surprised they didn’t offer the iPod in 256GB as soon as it was possible for whatever price, even if it was special order. With the size of iOS install, and the option of so many huge apps, photos and video storage as well, 128GB doesn’t come close to replacing the 160GB Classic for music storage alone. It’s too bad Apple doesn’t offer an iPad-like cellular option too, though I suspect part of the reason the iPod is still with us is the ability to crank out a one-size-fits-all cheaply manufactured device.
Hopefully Apple will offer one more Touch before it’s all over to address some of these short comings. Although I’m not interested in carrying a larger phone than the SE, I can see where a larger iPod makes sense, especially for kids playing games, and watching movies. A 256GB 5.8” iPod might be the ticket, with an eSIM and optional cellular radio.

Even $80 sounds like very little to get your IPT working again. However, the repair will probably involve more than just replacing the battery!
Keep your eye for iPhone SEs... discounted they can run as little as $100 and you don't have to activate cell service. Voila! Instant, modern IPT, with better camera, better battery life (the IPT is horrible is you go on line), and better speed.
It just does not get anywhere near enough use for it to be worth spending $80 dollars on. Even at $20 or $30 I should really just buy a used 2nd gen AirPort Express on eBay, upgrade to the latest firmware so it has AirPlay 2 support, and plug that in to the aux input on this speaker. It would honestly be more useful that way because I could control it remotely. Since the iPod Touch was free I had been using it but I can absolutely live without it. It would just be kind of sad to no longer have an iPod in regular use.
It would also be a total waste of money to buy an SE. Like I said, this thing lives on a speaker dock full time. Better camera, speed, and longer battery life are useless to me in this case. It plays Apple Music when I'm in the room and want to listen to music and I occasionally pick it up to quickly look something up with Safari. I hadn't taken it off the dock in probably 3 months when I noticed the battery had expanded.

If I had invested my own money in it to begin with I might feel more willing to throw some money at it to get it working again. I got it for free from work though so spending more than $20-$30 just seems like a waste of money when it's not something I need.
My dad plans on upgrading from his 6s, that I gave him as a hand me down, to a new iPhone this year so I may just ask for it back and use that. It has a new battery he had Apple put in within the last few months so it should be good for a while.
still steamed about ending the high-capacity Classic -- it is still my daily device of choice --but more importantly, why did Apple withdraw every one from the shelves simultaneous with its announcement of ending production? I was lucky to snag one as a spare at a Walmart that same day before they got around to pulling them, but I would have bought another if I could have found one then. Nope. they disappeared with urgency. I cannot understand why. they did not replace that space with something new in any store I visited...
and I echo the above comment about the Shuffle. When I venture out for a brisk walk at the park or the school track, my shuffle is absolutely perfect for the job. Sooner or later, I gues, I will venture back onto ebay to find a replacement one.

It's more expensive but they kind of already replaced the Shuffle. The Apple Watch and AirPods are what the Shuffle always wanted to be.
I’ve had three iPod touches. I didn’t really need a smart phone so they were ideal. No costly phone contract. Everywhere I went had WiFi so FaceTime and messages worked. Now I was given an iPhone an old 5c, works great and now not expensive £5 month for 10gb, 500mins and texts. But the iPod 6th gen is the device of choice much faster. I hope they continue the line.
