Apple Care worth it??????

i am going to purchase a new powerbook shortly, and was wondering if the apple protection plan was worth the change.....?? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Apple's support is AWFUL.

I've had nothing but problems with AppleCare when it comes to my PowerBook G3.

But as many problems I've had with my laptop with AppleCare, I can't even imagine how many problems I would have had if I had not purchased the AppleCare Protection Plan.

So if you plan on owning this PowerBook for any length of time at all, buy the AppleCare.

Me and Fran bought a Pismo at the same time. He with AC, me without.

Today he still have it, I don´t. Thats how good it is.

Or you could turn it around and say today I have a iBook 800 Combo while Fran STILL have his Pismo.

i wouldn't get it for a desktop because i should be able to fix most problems with that (since normally its SW related)

but a laptop, i'd definatly get apple care, laptops are just more fragile

i figure if there are any major HW problems apple will replace it for free like they did with the B&W G3 monitors

I think you got the right idea. Don't waste your money on Apple Care. When your computer breaks, it's a good excuse to get that new model you've been drooling over.

Actually I did the math after sending my first post. My iBook costed me ?1850, the AC would have costed me ?340 and I got ?550 for the dysfunctional Pismo. All in all my new iBook costed me ?960 or just about half its price. Quite a good bargain. And this time I got a 4 year insurance for free.

Whatever. I had Apple Care for my iMac last year. The hardrive died 28 days after purchase. Fixed in 48 hours for nothing...by the reseller...not Apple. I think for laptops AC would be a good idea...only if you purchase the laptop from a reputable local reseller or if you have a local Apple store you can get it to...my 2 cents...if I didn't have the Apple Care...I would have been ****ed.

if you're buying a laptop, get Apple Care. The display on a TiBook will cost you a grand alone to fix. And they are notorious about losing pixels after a while.

...i'm not saying its something you can't afford, but i'd rather not have to through around 1-2thousdand dollars if i can help it

Worth It? I have had a computer in for service for 2 weeks and Apple can't find the part needed to fix it. They will not offer to replace it , provide a loaner or say when they will ever repair it. I paid for AppleCare but it has been a waste in this case!!!!!!!

Applecare and any stuff like that is ridiculous. I just payed $3000 for a computer, I shouldn't have to pay for you to fix it because it shouldn't be breaking in the first place.

I think AppleCare now costs way too much in Canada. For the price, coverage ought to be on-site/next day with telephone support for the whole time. Our Dell coverage (which for the same price as Apple gets us 4-5 years) includes plenty of excellent support and hassle free service. I colleague got a 17" LCD replaced for ONE, that's right ONE, dead pixel. Appel seems to be a real stickler for that, and just refuses to replace your screen unless it's practically peppered with bad pixels. Considerng how much more Apple charges, this is completely unacceptable.

I think people might have misunderstood me. I´m not saying "Don´t buy AppleCare". I would recommend anyone buying a portable to do it.

If you are buying a computer or a mobile phone in any European Union country, your computer has 24 months guarantee. That is 2 years. In Apple papers the guarantee is still written to be 12 months. That practise has been on e.g. in Italy since end of June 2002. As I bought my Mac after that, it's guarantee IS 24 months. Apple as company would break the law here if their guarantee was 12 months. Thus, if withing the 24 months [supposing i still have this mac] of the purchase of the Mac I will have any problems, I will send it to be prepared and Apple will have to pay [or they would risk a bigger case].

I guess it'd be the time to change the text in the Macs sold in Europe. Having written 12 months when you are enabled to 24 is not legal either - the other day some consumers in the tv were complaining about that [about the mobile phones, not Macs. But Macs are applicable to that].

I bought it for my desktop. They replaced the logic board and both processors when one of my processors died.

Apparently when it went, it took the logic board with it.

I don't know that you'd be able to fix that yourself very quickly because of access to the parts.

At least they fixed it. My dual G4 tower has been in for repairs 2 weeks and Apple claims they can't find the needed part.

With solid state electronics, they either work out of the box or fail shortly after. So Applecare is a waste. If it breaks, it will break during the warranty.

... which in Europe is - hooray - 24 months. And as it looks too much like i'll need a powerbook sooner than that, i think i choose a "no" for the applecare. If that was in any case to 3 years and i've got the right already to 2 - if it will break after the 1st year, it will do it before the end of the second.
