External back up

I'm trying to back up my 256gb Iphone X so i can change t for an XSm but I dont have the space on my 512gb SSD macbook - can I somehow get itunes to back up my phone to an external hard drive with both my iphone and the HD connected to my macbook va USB?

    Hi , That didnt seem to work. My 1TB extrernal hard drive is called NEWMOVIESHD   and the backup file I copied and renames is called backupiphoneX  and then I typed this into terminal 

    and hit enter .. any ideas?

    If you can keep the iPhone X until you get the replacement, migrating is as simple as putting the old phone next to the new one when prompted to by the setup process and entering your Apple ID login. 

    No computer needed, completely seamless, and total personal involvement of about six minutes.

    I'm not sure EE under their upgrade anytime will let me have a new iphone before I return the old one? . - TBH I was going to get e new macbook soon anyway and this has just prompted me to get it sooner rather than later
