The Mach kernel that Apple uses references the i386, i860 (which is what WinNT was built for, then ported to other platforms), m68k, 68882, m88110, m88k, ppc, and sparc ISAs.
FonTS noted that if you swap the ppc Mach kernel for an i386 mach kernel, Mac OS X will boot. Because Mach is a microkernel, this means that Mac OS X has the drivers for i386 included in Mac OS X.
This doesn't mean that Mac OS X/i386 will ever be released, so like the original poster said, don't read too much into the lack of 85xx references in the system file.
