Cambell’s soup says Tomato soup sales are down - sell! Apple is more than just an iphone maker and investors need to get over it. I do believe apple knew the impact before telling investors that they will no longer report... the impact was a drop in stock price, apple picks up a few more shares under their buyback program along with Warren Buffet. stock price will soon rise and Buffer is billions richer in just one month.
Soup sales and booze sales go up when markets crash.
Why the fuck do sales have to "keep growing"? What's wrong if Apple continues to sell at their current numbers until the end of time? Why is that such a disaster? They already sell so much more, and make so much more profit than anyone else, that it's insane. At their current level, why is "slowing growth" such a terrifying thing? I've never understood this.
It's funny because Apple reported record numbers and they will report record numbers again. Even if iPhone sales stayed flat since 2014, they would have still sold a fuckton and still made a fuckton!
And then we have the idiot youtube trolls claiming iPhone sales are "declining" when that is not true at all.
Apple's online services have been famously awful for decades. A consumer facing company turning towards service revenues is a very bad thing. It means more fees for everything that used to be free or not needed. Service fees drive products like the Ring Doorbell which could record to your local network storage devices but instead forces you pay for online storage while stealing your bandwidth. We would love it if Apple included some free services with their overpriced computers and mobile devices but instead we can expect them to raise their prices. For developers, service is why they have to pay 30% of their app revenues to Apple. Don't expect any reduction in that percent. Will Apple start charging for Mac OS and iOS updates? That's a service. Service fees suck. They are like little vampires sucking on your wallet every month.
A post so full of crap....
You claim Apple services are awful and then complain that Apple is addressing them.
"Overpriced"
Nope, and most of the world population agrees Apple products are premium.
"service is why they have to pay 30% of their app revenues to Apple. "
You're one of those guys huh? You believe everything should be free to you but you won't give your apps for free.
"Will Apple start charging for Mac OS and iOS updates?"
No but Windows does. $60+ for a crappy update but you won't mention that will you? My friend needed Windows 10 and it was $140. He opted for an "overpriced" Mac instead for the quality and FREE upgrades.
It's a catch 22. The more you raise prices to offset a mature slowing market the fewer people buy. At some point Apple will reach the tipping point and then we'll see how they adjust.
Apples recent price increases are frankly stupid. Some products suffered more than others but increasing profits by raising prices to the point that you are no longer competitive has destroyed many businesses. I only purchased my Iphone XS this time around because my iPhone 4 was beyond usable. I have a need for a desktop but lets face it the Mini is now far harder to justify, especially for server duty..
So you're complaining about prices after upgrading from an 8 year old iPhone? Wow Apple really screwed you huh?
Getting close to the time I’ll be pulling the trigger on buying a bunch of AAPL. I have a feeling there’s more lows coming. Doubtful it’s going to $150, but remember it wasn’t that long ago it actually was that low. I think it’s not inconceivable it could hit $165. The stock is in full blown retreat right now.

Now that’s smart. Apple itself is backing up the moving van and filling it with this low priced AAPL. And just in time for Christmas! The impact of the present low-priced buybacks will be seen in future swelling Earnings Per Share and Revenue Per Share. Long term holders and those who are in a position to buy and wait out the present insanity will benefit from ths amazing stupidity.

Because Apple is an innovative company. Its products are not commodity.

I’ll bet Buffet isn’t letting this opportunity go.

It's the stock price and shareholders. No one else really cares. Definitely not users.
That said, sales are growing, just not unit sales. If anyone bought into Apple since 2015 thinking unit sales would see high growth, then they made the investment for the wrong reason.
Apart from being completely irrelevant for consumers, ASP also has its limits and limitations (as highlighted in the article).
The problem is the speculative nature of the market and if there is no growth, some investors twitch. If you're twitchy and someone says 'boo!' loud enough, it can lead to a sell off.
The more analysts talk of slipping unit sales, the more some investors will get nervous about next quarter's unit sales and that will be compounded by Apple not providing them.
The underlying health of its business is less dependent on iPhone but it remains an indicator for many investors.
I've long thought that Apple is overvalued. If long term investors come round to the same way of thinking, it would make sense to sell up and move on.
So if the twitchers want out for the wrong reasons and the long term investors want out for the right reasons, the short term cumulative result will be a hit on the share price but consumers will carry on as they are, oblivious to the stock price fluctuations.
There are lots of things Apple has for sale this holiday season. If Apple can keep their devices on the shelves or available for on time delivery I’m guessing this season will be one of the biggest for Apple.
Consider all the toys newly available for this buying season

HomePod
Apple Watch 4
iPad Pro 11” and 12.9”
iPhone Xs, Xs Max and the Xr
Apple Pencil 2
Apple folio keyboard
MacBook Air
Mac Mini
MacBook Pro
Oh this holiday we'll see a supercycle.
Watch 4 iPhone XS Max iPad Pro
Will definitely see a hike in sales.
It’s like I’m a kid in a toy store at Christmas time. Thank goodness the nearest Apple store is 2.5 hrs away.

Why are you complaining about Ring to justify your anger towards Apple? Speculating they’re going to charge for OS upgrades again which is never going to happen? What about all the free software they give away? Nobody is forcing you to pay for iCloud or anything else, the free tier is fine for users who don’t want to. Always with the negativity.

Complains about price increases. Bought top of the line iPhone anyway.
Apple (and all phone maker) sales starting to drop is nothing but an encouraging sign as far as I'm concerned.
Does nobody ever step back and think about how sick a society we are when we tether ourselves to electronic devices
that cost as much as some people pay for groceries for a whole year? Who, exactly, NEEDS a phone this badly?
Email? Camera? Twitter? It's really worth $1000 just so you can instantly bother people whom you barely know
because all our social time is spent looking at phone screens instead of looking people in the eye and talking to them?
No thanks. I am on the second phone I have owned in 15 years. It works. I can make calls on it. I can look at my email.
That's all a phone should be - a simple, rarely used, communication device. Not a connection to your very soul.
You created an account to post this nonsense? Nobody cares what some Luddite thinks a phone should be. Some of those people looking at phone screens are actually looking people in the eye and talking to them. Ever heard of FaceTime?
iPad Pro...haha. Apple will sell 10s of them I’m sure. The XS Max was only backordered for a few days after it was released - all configurations are readily available.
the Watch 4 however is a thing of beauty. That bad boy has actually been selling like hotcakes. I wish Apple reported watch unit sales because I bet the growth has been tremendous
It's a catch 22. The more you raise prices to offset a mature slowing market the fewer people buy. At some point Apple will reach the tipping point and then we'll see how they adjust.
It’s a completely backward narrative. Apple started raising iPhone prices in 2014 with the iPhone 6/6+. That year was an exception because there was tons of built up demand for larger screen iPhones, but ever since unit growth has been leveling off with higher and higher ASPs. Raising prices has been the cause of that leveling off, not the other way around.

Exactly. Look at KO (Coca Cola). That soft drink has been leveled off for a long time. KO has simply added other products to the line, including spring water. The stock trades at a P/E of 89, but traditionally in the mid 20s. Apple has leveled off iPhone sales by raising prices significantly, likely searching for the optimum price/demand point in the curve. Not only has this greatly juiced both revenue and earnings associated with that product, Apple has, like The Coca Cola Company. continued to add other products. The market is irrational, but I’m not. Like Apple, I continue to purchase shares.

Yeah, like my electricity and water bills. Every month they charge me for these services that I think should be free. Um, if you don’t want to pay, just don’t sign up. And by the way, history says Apple has given away a lot of free stuff. OS updates, productivity apps, etc. Take a look at the list of apps you get with a new iPhone or iPad or Mac.

I’m old enough (56) to remember waiting by the phone for calls, waiting for someone else to get off the phone so I could make a call, sharing the house phone and its associaed number with family members, paying exhorbitant prices for out-of-state calls, waking up to an actual alarm clock, buying film for a camera, that was a separate device to carry, not built into my phone. Sitting in a living room sharing access to a TV, and often arguing over what gets watched, and waiting for a specific time when a desired program would come on, often waiting for days.
I remember waiting days, then, after a few years, miraculously waiting only 24-hours, and then incredibly only an hour, to get back stacks of printed pictures (such progress over those years), which I treasured for long periods because they were so arduous and expensive to take and get developed. We (my mom) paid extra money for physical photo albums, to organize, store and show family photos.
I remember calling a taxi, from a phone either at home or a pay phone, if you could find one. Less convenient than Uber or GrabCar (a similar service in SE Asia).
I didn’t have to walk uphill in a blizzard both ways to school and back, but it’s true that technology has enabled our lives more than disabled them. Even allows you and I, two people who have never met in person and likely never will, to exchange ideas on this or any topic. It’s not down to the tech if people don’t look each other in the eye.
When I moved to the Philippines two years ago, it was social media, brought to me through my smartphone, that enabled me to meet online and eventually in person, with many expats who had come prior. I now count several as close friends I hangout with several times weekly, and many others as online friends I may meet one day (they are on other islands in this archipelago of over 7000 islands). And I’ve met many locals via social media too, including my current girlfriend. It’s all in how you use technology.
