nahhh, then i would really feel werid about sexing up EmAn's Mom....instead of just slightly werid like i do now....plus i can't be like you EbOy...i is too old to yank it 3 times a day... g

Ebby, I wouldn't be overly concerned about kernel panics: I steered clear of X until Jaguar, installed it straight over my OS 9 system on launch day and have still to see a panic on my machine...
Funny story... I went over to my friends house to help his girlfriend with her new iBook. When I came over she was in OS X and was surfing the web and checking her mail. I asked her if she switched to OS X from OS 9....she asked back, "What's OS 9?" I replied, "Um, forget that...".
Actually, I did reboot into OS 9 and gave her a tour...she's back in OS X. And as you can see...she never used Macs prior to this. She said she just thought OS X was the OS for Macs and that was that. She was able to get started and do the things she wanted to do and all her USB stuff worked right off the bat. She did need some help with iPhoto and iTunes from me but that was it.
OS X for newbies I guess is just that easy...I'd be curious to see an Apple survey on that...
the only problem I have with x is the loss of control that I feel (rightly or wrongly). I still have problems uninstalling software. for example, today I installed a scanner which promptly refused to work (even though apple system profiler recognised it exactly). so I run the uninstaller that came with it but it still leaves folders and files in various places and its not easy to figure out what is needed and what isn't. with 9 you could get an entire list of extensions etc and tell what they did and which app they belong to just by looking at the icon. in X some of the names of files are just plain bizarre.
for this reason I've never customised my mac for fear of installing something that would be damaging come a subsequant system update.
I installed Word X today - fine. I then installed Excel X. now everytime I run word it works fine but every time I run Excel it asks me for my personal details and my cd key which I had to type in every time I launched the app. I had no idea where to even begin sorting out the prob and ended up dumping Office and starting again.
I think X will eventually win but its taking far longer to become Mac-like for my comfort.
i know u are more likely to see problems on these boards but i've been kinda scared ever since i got kernal panics from a bad 6f15 build that i downloaded before 10.2 was released...thand jebus i installed it and tested it on my one hard drive first...oddly it ran fine off of there
Well. I guess its settled. OS X. I kind?a assumed people who had problems would post here more often, but there are a lot of people who don't know about AI and these Mac sites. And as the "Family Technician" I am called to fix everyone's computer problems. (I'm the freak in my family; I know how to use computers, but the gene stops here.)
Soon my grandparents will know OS X better than me! Scary!
Time to get a new computer.
