Verizon app update allows entirely app-based eSIM activation for iPhone XS, XR

Verizon on Tuesday updated its customer service app, My Verizon, with support for fully app-based eSIM activations on the latest iPhone XS, XS Max and XR.

iOS 12 dual-SIM

The U.S. carrier first began activating iPhone eSIMs last week, but until now it was relying on a QR code system to enable the feature. My Verizon is a free download for Verizon customers.

The approach is similar to one T-Mobile is planning to implement later this month. AT&T remains dependent on codes, and Sprint has yet to say when it will begin offering eSIM lines.

Integrated into the latest iPhones, Dual SIM, Dual Standby technology lets people run two separate lines on a single device, one with a physical Nano SIM card and another via a built-in eSIM. Secondary lines can typically only handle voice and SMS, though it is possible to make it a data-only connection. The latter is especially handy for traveling, allowing people to avoid high data roaming charges.

Mac Rumors is reporting the feature is only available for non-Verizon customers who want to add a line with Verizon as the secondary service.
