Couldn't they have a new SE based on the 7/8 like the original was 5/6 based and tweak the parts in the same way that allows the X to be not in dispute?
That would solve a few problems all at the same time.
Bonus points if they pull out a smaller Xr at the same early year release date.

Yes, I suppose they could do that, though I'd rather they stay with the current design... but if you mean internals, yes, for sure. I think the reason we don't see one right now, is they are trying to keep the ASP up. After enough people buy XR or X, etc. maybe they will refresh it.
I'd have previously said it is likely gone for good, but given the Mac mini and rumors (if true) of an updated iPad mini, maybe Apple does get that pie charts aren't everything.
