You really need to stop giving one company who want to make money off repairs so much of a voice in this dialog. It's a totally one-sided discussion by a company with a financial interest in getting things there way. Just because they can't make money off repairing something does not make it a bad product. They've managed to manipulate the tech media into giving them a disproportionate voice on this topic.
Amen, even the title is fake news.  These can be repaired, and Apple charges a fee to do so.
Outside of the battery being replaced what repair service does Apple offer for Airpods?  I don't own them so I am curious..
Me too. Considering that AirPods are glued together, I wonder whether an Apple "repair" might not turn out to be exchange.

It would be nice to be able to replace their batteries. One might imagine an alternative design where the "tusk" portion containing the battery simply unscrewed for battery access.

That is precisely what one would want to do. Replace the battery in the each bud. The Galaxy Buds got a 6 out of 10 from ifixit due to the relatively easy procedure to replace the coin cell battery in each bud which is available online. These buds last 2 years as we know now. Great moneymaker for Apple “the environment friendly company” Any disposable plans ?
Over two years here. But to make the Samsungs able to let someone replace the battery they gained in size and look like hearing aids. I’d rather buy APs that don’t look like heading aids, and recycle the old pair.

Apple exchanges the buds for $69 if it’s oow and not a battery issue or you lose one and $49 if it’s oow and has a bad battery.
They don’t really fix glued products:

Apple watch - replace at repair facility
iPad - replace for battery cost if battery has failed
    Apple pencil - replace
    Apple TV - replace
    Siri remote - replace
Homepod - Apple wouldn’t dare try to repair this
MacBook Pro - replace topcase for battery cost

Can't really have small tiny things that can be repaired.  Designers hate including mounting screws because they make products larger.  Some things just aren't meant to be repaired and IMHO, this would be one.  Would one rather have a larger product but user repairable.... or as small as ergonamically possible wireless headphones?  Even many if not all of the bulkier over-the-ear headphones aren't repairable.

Replacing the battery of a laptop, now that's where I'd like to be able to spend half an hour max'd to replace.

iFixit should have included that disclosure.  It's more for publicity.  I doubt they expected anything.

Apple is a company that makes their devices impossible to fix (and modify, such as being unable to make simple upgrades on their Macs) so that all repairs go through them and only them to continue making money off of their customers even after purchase.

Just to clarify, iFixit doesn’t repair anything. They are not a repair shop and they don't sell parts.
Sorry - you are incorrect.  iFixit DOES sell parts.  They sell parts and tools to repair most small electronic items.  Just browse their web site to see for yourself.

How is iFixit manipulating the media?
I would argue they are not so much manipulating media than manipulating potential buyers who are stupid enough to  believe repairability rating means the higher it is the better the value, so all went out to buy Samsung Pods (which BTW has rating 6 against 0 for Airpods).
