The only technical limitation is the fact that Apple is now directly competing with Netflix both with offering movies and now its own TV shows.

I've never liked Netflix anyways. Everything I want to watch is not available on Netflix. To me, it's just not worth the money.

Why would anybody stream Netflix from their device to their Apple TV?  Why not just use the Apple TV app or the Netflix app on their TV?
Because my mother has an older ATV where the Netflix app keeps crashing, so watching via iPad to her TV is the only way. And because all things should be as easy as possible: Watch on TV, watch on iPad, start on one and simply throw the video onto the TV (without opening Netflix app, wait, choose account, wait, scroll down to Keep watching, open the flick, start playing the flick...). Just simple and with all options open.

If anyone figures you should reply to this with saying ”just buy a newer ATV” you are more than welcome to pay ;)

Why should a Mobile Price option hinder the rest of us who pays the full price? Just turn off AirPlay on those who only has Mobile Plan, no?

Makes sense to me. Maybe it’s a bug. Time will tell.

Because the iPhone app doesn't play those godawful, unstoppable trailers that I get in the Apple TV app.
Agreed, these are user-hostile and awful. Maybe once per rollover, but ever single time you stop moving focus is insufferable.
The Netflix “app” on my 3rd gen ATV doesn’t play trailers either.

With this in mind, if I were an avid Netflix watcher (I’m not), it would almost be worth it to track down some used or refurb ATV 3 to put on each TV just for Netflix.

I can point you two examples that I personally have used. I live in Germany, so these examples may not apply in other markets.
    1) here StarTrek Discovery is available on Netflix. When the four StarTrek-Short Treks were first made available here (right before season 2 debuted) they were only available from the iOS interface. The did eventually make it to the native AppleTV interface, but there is still some delay from the time new episodes of Discovery (and maybe other shows) show up in the app for iOS and the one for Apple TV.
    2) because Netflix uses Geofencing even within the EU (on going court case right now if I remember right) different programming is available in different countries here. Since I frequently travel to other countries here, I’ll often open up Netflix in the evenings and see what is available in other places. Sometimes I’ll download a whole season of a show or a movie and bring it back to Germany to finish via AirPlay on my big screen if I don’t finish it on the road. I can remember going to Chech Republic and seeing Black Sails for the first time (which still isn’t available in Germany) and downloading all of seasons 1&2 and finishing them at home.

These two examples are ones that affect me with this change and I’ll be sorry that the feature is gone (and probably not coming back).
I don't Netflix would be sympathetic to your need for AirPlay to pirate shows.

Lots of reasons.  Mine is that my HughesNet satellite internet sucks big time.  If you live in an area with landline cable you’d have no clue.  Netflix will typically stall 7-8 times over a two hour movie and I have to wait 30-60 seconds for it to buffer before the movie continues.  Totally unacceptable, but that’s HughesNet for you.  And I have few alternatives.  On the other hand, I have unlimited data on AT&T and I never get a stalled movie using it.
Can you turn on the AT&T Hotspot on your iPhone and connect your ATV to it?

    What a bunch of crap.

Netflix is controlling what I do with MY subscription on MY devices.

    Not right. At all.

    There are no tech limitations.

Netflix streams a video. Then my iPad takes care of sending it to my big screen.

Netflix literally has to work harder to PREVENT ME from enjoying the service the way I want than to allow airplay to work.

It sucks when apple goes to awesome lengths in crafting crafting wonderful tools to enjoy life easily and then stupid decisions like this are made by every little player to further their own ends.

Haha. You’re an idiot for thinking it’s YOURS. try reading the user agreement once.

Because it's easier to type in searches on your phone, and then AirPlay2 it to your Apple TV (or other device).
Seriously? You can type in Apple TV searches on your iPhone already.

Actually and to be frank e have discontinued use of Apple on all of our 4 smart LG tv’s - and the only device we now use is Roku. We found Apple device too controlling in switching devices including to the TV ... also Apples latest boxes always came on no matter when we did not even want to use them. It became unbearable - so they are all in a box waiting for the next garage sale. We are new to the Roku box but like these very much.
Thanks for that useless post of trolling. It has nothing to do with the article.

Um... I hate to burst your bubble, but it actually IS MY subscription. It’s not my content but it is my subscription. So... before offering advice based on a faulty presupposition, you may want to take some reading comprehension classes.

Netflix is introducing "mobile only" plans in some markets at a steep discount.  They don't want those people to be able to "get around" the mobile only restriction by being able to use AirPlay.  I assume that they have more control over the chromecast stuff - so they can effectively shut that down for mobile-only users.
"...Netflix confirmed in a statement to The Verge that because of the way that AirPlay 2 works, the company chose to end support for the feature. According to the statement, AirPlay doesn’t have digital identifiers that Netflix can use to see which device is receiving the stream. With the wealth of TV manufacturers Apple partnered with to bring AirPlay 2 to more televisions, that means Netflix can’t tell which TV's subscribers are casting to and can’t certify they’ll get the best experience."

NetFlix is a 'crap' product...I'd prefer to watch anything via iTunes and pay for it than navigate thru such a shit interface.
You mean, like buying $9.99 or $14.99 for one piece of content that is not transferable? When you die, you can’t hand that purchase over. Or device to give it as a present to your sibling. So really, it’s a fake purchase, a very restricted license. If it’s that restricted anyway, a streaming model makes more sense.

And boy the iTunes interface sucks big time! Netflix is much better in this regard. Different opinion I guess. What don’t you like about Netflix (compared to iTunes) when it comes to user experience?

Just use the remote app on your iPhone or iPad to control your ATV.
Might have a 2nd/3rd gen ATV.

The separate Remote app works on 3rd gen ATV. I fire it up any time I want to search for something on my 3rd gen ATV, so I can use my iPhone keyboard to type...

...however, the "Remote" that is available to put in Control Center is different than the separate app--it does not work for 3rd gen ATV. Strange but true.
