He’s not. He’s no more sophisticated than Samuel Thompson was. It’s just that it is easy to sucker the average person. All you have to do is get them emotional and tell them how unfair the rest of the world is treating them. Because you know that a person’s situation in life has nothing to do with their own personal decisions. It’s always somebody else’s fault.

So glad Apple will not be directly affected by #45's global intimidation scam, however the global economy may not agree with your assessment. This will impact many more companies, countries and economies than just China.
So what’s your solution to China's blatant thievery of technology and intellectual property, and the dumping of Chinese steel and other durable goods at prices no American producer can match? Keep “talking”  to them in hopes they will mend their ways? When someone comes in with the predictable negative response to these tariffs I always ask what solution they recommend other than simply capitulating to China and accepting our new role of a second rate economy controlled by and at the mercy of China.

So let’s hear your solution. Or is it just because #45 is doing it and that makes it bad?
I think spice-boy’s post echos a lot of people’s frustration about these tarrifs and whether they have helped or hurt Americans and our economy.

Your points are valid about the crimes China has committed, but is #45’s solution helping, or hurting us in the long term?
It doesn’t help when it appears that #45 does not know how tarrifs work and who will bear the brunt of higher costs.

The flip side is that Wall St. acts hysterically whenever the threat of any punitive measure is talked about.

Is really it possible to think this President doesn’t understand how tariffs work? That seems like a shallow position to take, given that his economic advisors are the best available and because he himself has personal business experience with dealing with tariffs in the construction business. He made it very clear that the best route forward would be “no tariffs”. This is a high-level negotiation between the US and China, involving carrots and sticks to the tune of billions of dollars and right now the stick is being used. The President is doing the right thing because the US has the upper hand and can deal with trade from a position of economic strength. That’s when you want to press hard, not when you’re weakened.

I have more success explaining quantum physics to people than I do explaining economics. So I don't bother even trying to explain economics any more, I generally stick to quantum physics. It's easier getting people to believe a particle behaves like a wave than to explain where money comes from or the right strategy to negotiate a deal. Whenever possible I use physics (eg, potential vs kinetic energy) as a metaphor for economics (eg, potential sales vs actual sales) because people understand physics more clearly than economics. The irony is that people think they don't understand physics but also think that they do understand economics.

That’s actually one of my problems with tariffs and government regulations in general. They allow companies in favorable political positions to get benefits at the expense at other businesses. Undermines free competition.
Explain free competition? Bank should have no regulations? Drug companies should have not regulations?  Seriously???

In any war, military or economic, innocents get hurt. The national media is pounding away at the “tariffs are hurting Americans” narrative. Of course they are but yet that same media offers no alternative but to stop the tariffs. Previous administrations have tried negotiating to no avail. As another commenter posted we have let China get away with stealing our technology, stealing our IP, and stealing our markets through predatory pricing. Nothing has yet stopped the Chinese from doing what they damn well please in their assault on the U.S. economy. When you buy an electric drill from Northern Tools or Harbor Freight at half the price of a DeWalt or Craftsman or Milwaukee or Hilti you’re buying stolen technology. The same factory that’s assembling those name branded tools are shipping inferior knockoffs out the back door just like they do iPhone knockoffs. And some here celebrate that thievery.
It is not the media's responsibility to offer alternatives.  It is the media's responsibility to report that TARIFFS are in fact hurting Americans!

China didn't break into the WTO!  They were invited and many billions of dollars have been made because of it.  We are now a part of a global economy and captive to the current structure.  Free marketers should rejoice, but I hear howls because someone other than the US is profiting off of the deal.  It has been reported for decades that China was stealing IP and forcing foreign companies to transfer or share proprietary technology as a condition for access to its markets.  We made a deal with the devil and Donald Trump playing tough guy isn't gonna undo decades of abuse by China and America's rich who will benefit no matter what happens.

As I understand it this is how capitalism and free markets work.  If you are not happy with the status quo maybe you would like to change the current system to one that creates wealth like China but also has enough power and control to marshall resources (money and people) to accomplish strategic goals, but that would be socialist!

Donald Trump is claiming that China is paying billions in tariffs to the US Treasury!!!  Is there a limit to the lies, deceit, or stupidity that will wake America up.  What would be worse?  The President lying about China paying tariffs or actually not knowing how tariffs works.  We have jumped the shark with this one!  If you are a Trump supporter pull the plug while we still have a country to disagree over.

If you wanted to elect a tough guy as President you should have picked Bufford Pusser but instread you people elected Aerys II Targaryen (The Mad King)

Free markets are the goal. They are not the reality. Nearly every nation engages in protectionist measures to some degree, including bailouts, subsidies, limiting foreign competition, etc.

What seems most likely is that he is lying and will lose this negotiation - he has no track record of business or negotiating success. Just go count the lawsuits and bankruptcies. Playing tough is fine if you are 1. smart 2. tough 3. know the end game you want.
