I'm surprised they put an old A10 in it. Usually they put their best CPUs even in the low-end stuff so it can stay on the shelf longer. Very, very nice to see that they're staying committed to small screens, this means at least the next four releases of iOS will continue to support the 5-series screen size.
I think that says a lot:
-- About how powerful the A10 is
-- And, about how over-powered subsequent devices are.

That's not a complaint.   Just a recognition that, for many people and uses, the A11, A12 and (soon) A13 provide more power than they can effectively need or use.

The same seven-year-old design and display from 2012. Still no Touch ID. Still without an ambient light sensor and probably the same crappy battery life as in previous model. Time to throw Tim Cook out. NOW.

A lot of us just want an iPod in our pockets WITHOUT Cellular/Mobile Service. I really just want my songs in my pocket. Like the old iPod. They should do an remake of the old iPod with 256, 512 and 1TB storage options so I can have my entire music collection offline in my pocket and bicycle around Europe listening to any of my favorite songs without the worry or temptation of a telephone call or text message coming through to disturb me. I want ALL my music in my pocket with the form factor of the original iPod nano. Many of us don't care about the cost, just build it and I will buy it. Relaunch the RAM version of the original iPod in a smaller form factor. No video.

I don’t get why someone wouldn’t buy an iPhone 7 instead and just not activate cellular. On Amazon there are iPhone 7s for under $300.
People like me, prefer portable devices. Plus $200 is a good price point for folks looking to get into iOS in developing nations which puts 20-40% tariffs. Developers need to have test devices. Plus which other iOS device has 256GB storage within $400 ?
Does the target market for this device need 256GB? Plus it looks like the only thing they really updated was the processor. Not sure why it took this long to do a processor bump. Honestly the only reason to buy this is if you absolutely must have a headphone jack.
    Perhaps!
For me, the biggest appeal of an iPod is that it can carry and play my music library.

Apple wiped mine out (at least on my iPhone) when I subscribed to Apple Music.
Now, many songs are missing and even more have been replaced with other versions of the same song.  One example is when they replaced the songs from the original live Benny Goodman at Carnergie Hall concert with later recorded copies.   That was a historical concert that changed music in America by introducing big band jazz to the elite and was played by icons of the era:   Benny, Gene Krupa, Harry James, Lionel Hamptom and others....  It can never be replaced of duplicated.  But, now its gone.

But, I could use an iPod to load my original vinyl and CD library without fear Apple will replace it with their own versions.
What’s the difference between an iPod Touch and iPhone when it comes to music?

So how much longer will A10 devices get iOS updates?

I think this would imply for quite a while.

"new model improving on all its predecessors' specifications" - ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?   The ONLY specification that has been changed is upgrading the ancient A8 processor to a soon to be 3 year old chip (and possibly 2GB RAM and an obscenely priced 256GB option.  The screen, battery, camera, lack of biometric security, and bluetooth are still the same as the 2015 model.   This is an embarrassing offering.  Offering a 256GB option is Apple milking as much margin from an poorly spec'ed device as possible.  Just the kill the Touch - Apple is ruining it's proud history.
The spin on this product is quite amusing. Seems to me it’s nothing more than Apple had A10 chips lying around. Everything else about the product is old. No Bluetooth 5.0, no ambient light sensor, of course no Touch ID, old camera etc. And the 128 and 256 models could be $50 cheaper. The margins on those have to be massive.

Interesting update, I have to agree Apple could have done better.  However we should t be surprised, Apple has been on a run with poor updates to products that deserve better.

Only upgrading the SoC does seem like a measly upgrade.  If Apple had upgraded the SoC & screen size to 4.7", that would be a great $199 device.

Better off buying an iPhone 7 for $200 on eBay.

I can only speak for myself, but the iPhone 7 is bigger and doesn't have a 3.5mm jack.
Ok, valid. Then get an SE for $100 on eBay?

It's extremely ironic that something called the iPod Touch doesn't have Touch ID.

You mean a non iOS device?

I really thought Apple wasn’t going to update the thing. With the iPhone SE having a limited potential, this may very well be the last 4” iOS device. Who uses wifi only anymore? Also curious to see if it will end up being the last iOS device with a headphone port as the iPads are slowly ridding of it.

Apple's margins are only ever "massive" if you only look at hardware costs.   But, what sets Apple apart is not its hardware but its software and ecosystem -- both of which are priced in when you buy the hardware so WE don't see it.   But, Apple still has to pay for it.

I see they had the good sense to keep the TRS jack.
That wasn't a decision. This is an economies of scale update.

The A10 is still being made by Apple for use in several products. This is simply an economies of scale update, to replace the chip they are no longer making in any volume with  one that they are.

guess i hoped to much about the ipod touch. the updated specs are okay, but i was hoping for a bigger screen the size of maybe the 7 or 7 plus. hope they release a version when arcade comes out. that would be awesome!

I’m taking that into account. I still think the margins on this device, especially the 128 and 256 models has to be huge.
