Still no ability to use Apple Pencil 1 with the new iPads - fail.
Will never happen and is not a fail. The new ipad and pencil use different, better hardware. Unfortunately it isn’t backwards compatible. Happens. But not advancing and staying with the same older hardware because of backwards compatibility is a mistake.
No - forcing people to throw out old hardware that works and fulfills their needs is a mistake. I don’t expect the new pencil to work with the old machines, nor do I expect the old pencil to suddenly gain new capabilities, but there is no technical reason the old pencil can’t work with the new machines.
When USB 3 was announced, you could still use your USB 2 peripherals. When new Bluetooth specs came along, the old devices were not suddenly abandoned simply because they didn’t have all the capabilities of the newer devices. This is no different.
It appears that one cannot directly wright with the Apple Pencil directly in the email app, without having to do markup.
Edit: options are mazec ($$$) or penscript (free) that both seem to use the myscript engine (make sure they can’t access your data, why do they need that? Don’t give them your permission).
That's the way that all 3rd-party keyboards work and (AFAIK) if you don't grant them access, they don't work. It's the same issue with both iOS and Android and, no, it's not a security risk.
I have noticed that if I turn on the iPad 10.2 with iPadOS 13.2.3, with the Apple Pencil 1st gen charging, it will automatically connect the pencil to the iPad without having to inset the Apple Pencil to the lightning port in the iPad. Is this a new feature?

I agree. I`ve just upgraded from a 12.9 " Ipad Pro to the new model & its a nuisance & an unwanted extra expense, having to fork out again for a new Ipencil.
