I'm happy with a 3% market share...

Think about this guys:

If everyone in the world used a Mac, we wouldn't have as much of a great pride as we do now. I'm always happy to see people switch, but... I'm not sure if I would want everyone in the world to have a Mac. I'm just happy the way things are: I'm better than 97% of PC users. Think Different.

    Are you happy with 2.7?

You're either moving forward or falling back. I guarantee you that at <1% there won't be any mac platform as you know it. They need to get back in the 5-10% range.

yea, I have a feeling if the mac was the leader in marketshare it would'nt be the same friendly tool we use today. I would like it to be better than 3% though, and blazing fast workstations please, its one thing to be the underdog, its another to be a slow underdog.

I'm not happy with ? 3%. But if Apple grows past ? 10% I think much of the charm of owning a Mac would disappear.

Somewhere around 8-10% would be perfect IMO.

What I really meant was (plainly) I'm happy not being number one in sales - not completely satisfied with 3% - with 8%-10%, I think we could get some more 3rd party products and software (DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, WOOOO!!!!! <a href="http://www.flamingmailbox.com/maccomedy/movies/balmer.html"; target="_blank">http://www.flamingmailbox.com/maccomedy/movies/balmer.html</a>; )

More marketshare would be easier on everyone -- Apple and us. Prices could drop (they can drop already, but that's another story), Apple wouldn't have such a hard time with developers, peripherals, and buying a competitive CPU. Would mot have wanted to let Apple's business slide if they were selling them 2-3X as much product?

It'd be easier to find Apple service, you'd have a bigger pool of mac-friends (flesh and blood, not cyber-friends) who could help you with your mac problems, it's more likely that your bank would support your electronic banking, that web services would load up quickly and hassle free, that your cable tech support would have a friggin clue about your machine...

Marketshare has its advantages and Apple CANNOT afford to lose any more of it.

97% - apple would become more like MS

8%-10% - would be super...specially for my apple stock.

&lt;=3% - no good...perhaps apple is most aggressive and innovative when they see they are being pushed toward the cliff but it needs to grow

I think a 20% market share is just nice. Its not too huge such that I am no longer special, yet big enough to attract software developers.

apple has ALOT of developers for it now, with 10% you wouldn't have to worry

Careful.... if the apple market gets too big, we will start to see some shitty developers just looking for a quick buck...

I would much rather have 100 very focused developers producing 300 or so very good apps out of 1000 or so total rather then 5000 shitty developers with 1000 or so good apps and 10000 crappy ones...

look at the mess on the other side of the fence.... sure they have a lot of support and developers... but most of it is CRAP....

yes i know, when i said apple would be like MS i didn't mean just a shitty company, but the problems they have apple would have

the only motivation i would have for 20% market share is to make me money from my stock, i want apple back up at 60-70 haha

I'm not sure if you can draw a parallel with the current game console market.

Not certain, but what is Playstation's share. I'd venture it's up around 80%.

With the remaining 20 percent going to XBox and GameCube, there seem to be no shortage of software developed for them.

I want simultaneous cross platform releases, I want optimizations for Apple hardware, and I want a Mac-like interface for all my applications. I'm guessing 10-15 percent should do that. 3 percent isn't enough.

Where is Maple 8 for one? Why do they think they can take such a leisurely approach to its release? What about Maya Unlimited or Quark or 3d Studio Max or Unreal Tournament 2003? The small market share is just making it too easy for developers to push Mac-users around.

If Apple's marketshare climbed back to the 7-10% range, it's stake in professional and education would be much higher, possibly as high as 20-30%. Apple has been beaten badly in the last two years in professional and education sales. With those two core markets highly penetrated the "good" apps would flow freely and quickly (often even before the windows counterpart) even though the overall marketshare was only 7-10%. The first step in making investors less queasy is to get marketshare back up over a legit 5% (worldwide) and then to assail at least 7-10% in rich markets like the USA and Japan.

It can be done. Apple farms out manufacturing, they need only keep easily updatable architectures on board that let them plug in the latest CPU/GPU with minimal board/case changes changes, while they spread their 'book production around. Apple can have all the flexibility it needs to produce at will, they just need to keep prices at a level where product moves, prices that except for a couple of models their currnet line-up doesn't represent. PRICE PRICE PRICE!!! Doesn't need to be bargain basement, it just needs to be more reasonable than it has been. If they can keep the competition in spitting distance they traditionally do well. See the iBook specifically and the PB's more generally.

I'll be happy as long as Apple is both prospering enough to be able to afford risks, and enough of a minority that it feels compelled to take them.

10% sounds about right, although I wouldn't mind higher. I would start minding when Apple started to get complacent, though. And even with Steve the perfectionist at the helm, they might well. It's human nature, alas.

One thing is fore sure, Apple has to start thinking about Europe. They don't do really bad here for no reason. Let's see some Apple Stores and commercials.

I don't even want to mention the European prices. Sometimes we pay as mush as $1000 more for the same computer.

Where is apple percentage wise in actual computers sold, not by os, like if you break down the pc side to the major companies dell, sony, hp, etc...

Like Dell sold "this" percent of all the computers, Apple sold "this"percent.

I think the sweet spot of 8-12% is nice. I don't want it so small that I can't walk into Target and not be able to get that NASCAR game or Norton Utilities (which is the current situation), but I honestly don't think I'd ever like to see Apple with a 25, 30, 40 or 50% marketshare.

Indeed, there would be some sort of loss of "underdog appeal" or whatever you want to call it. I want them to get more popular and to attract more switchers, of course. But I'd hate for them to get big, arrogant, lose focus on quality and innovation, etc.

I think being small and having a smaller piece of the pie (compared to Microsoft, Dell, etc.) keeps them humble and innovative. They can't afford to get lazy and churn out schlock because they have to truly EARN their customers.

However, once they do, they often have them for life (in 10 years, I can count on one hand the number of people I know who've migrated from the Mac to Windows...but the other way around? TONS...).

I'd like Apple to have a bit more than they do now, for sure. That would be good. But still small and niche-y enough that when you fling open a PowerBook or a friend or co-worker walks into your home and sees your LCD iMac or 23" Cinema Display, the only response they can muster is "HOLY SHIT...THAT'S THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!!!"
