iBook keyboard traces on screen problem SOLUTION! Best ever!

I know that this has been an age old problem. The keyboard tends to rub on the screen giving the screen marks.

Some people put a piece of paper or something on it to avoid this. I did this too, but it was annoying and I kept on losing the piece of paper i was using.

But I have come up with a new solution which is the best as I see it.

Stick two pieces of rubber whatever you call it, like the ones already on the top of the screen of the ibook on the bottom corners too. Like this, the screen will never rub on the keyboard.

I think this is a great solution and people shouldn't spend so much money on the leather things that certain companies produce to take advantage of the iBook's problem.

Tell me what you think.

Cheers.

I just got my iBook a couple of days ago and was afraid of the very same thing. I had read too many posts about the keyboard marking the screen. I bought a little foam pad when I got my book. I always use it whenever I close the lid. Gotta protect my investment!

As I have already said, the foam pad's really dumb.

My way is a lot better

    Doesnt anyone understand?

I have an even BETTER solution!

    Ignore it!

I actually haven't seen the keyboard marks except when the screen is off. So I just ignore it as it doesn't detract from the image whatsoever.

but it can become permanent if you don't clean it like at least once a month or so

Oh my gosh!! I feel "prison raped"!!

I guess its a bit like Wallace and Darwin. They both came up with the idea of Natural selection in parallel.

Somehow, the silicone thing looks ugly and I don't understand why they put it all around. It looks really obvious.

All I did was put small round ones just like the existing ones on the bottom two corners and it works just as well.

    And it costs $10!!???

    How lame.

    Oh well, I guess I wasn't the first to think of it. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

This is just a guess but does the iBook screen not flex enough that you need more than just two of these in the corners?

Yes, your guess is wrong. I understand what you mean, but it just doesn't happen. If you don't believe me you can try for yourself. I can't even see the rubber things on my screen as they are very low, hidden by the actual computer.

As for the company that make those silicone things: what are they?...desperate?!?!

um, myself being a power i-user, a proloser if you will, or whatever the fancy-schmancy term at Apple may be, I have yet to see the first keyboard trace on my screen, though I close it often, carry it around, often pick it up with one hand (thus pressing the screen even closer to the keyboard). I use to have serious problems like that with my pismo, not with this ibook 600 though (maybe because it's 14 inch):

I think the issue only comes when you put the book in between books or stuff, like in a school bag.

Mayby you're right, the 14 inch might be better designed to avoid this.

Can you show me a picture of what these rubber things look like or where did you get the rubber things?

Also you said you placed them at the bottom corners right? Just making sure.

Speaking of how to clean the screen, how do you do it? This is my first laptop (12 in. pb), and I don't want to damage it. Any advice?

Get iKlear or some kind of laptop screen cleaner substitute. I used some substitute that cost around 5 bucks at microcenter. I think you can search the apple knowledge base for more information on cleaning your screen.

Do you really need to spend that much money on screen cleaning stuff?

I just clean my screen with a moist piece of cotton as Apple reccommends.

My screen doesn't really get that dirty and I cant imagine anyone's screen getting very dirty unless one works like in the wild.

Just don't clean your screen with stuff like alcohol or windex. those can really damage your screen.

Oh, and another thing, cleaning the keyboard with alcohol works great but be sure to not touch any other place like the palm rest with it. It makes it become yellow.

I don't know if its worth the trouble, taking a picture of it.

    Its really quite simple.

My rubber things I just tore off from the bottom of my external cd writer but the ideal rubber things should look similar to the existing ones on the top, which look quite discrete.

Yes, just stick them on the very bottom two angles. Just follow the top rubber things down to the bottom corners. Like this, whe you open the book, you can hardly see the rubber things as they're sort of underneath the main body.

    Hope this helps

    About cleaning LCD screens:

Anything will work as long as there is NO Alcohol or Amonia in the cleaning solution.

    Never use abrasive cleaning stuff.

Dont use execisive amounts of water, and not dry quickly.

These are all ways to destroy your LCD screen forever.

    Xionja,

What do you do in Ithaca? Its a nice place but unless you're studying, what are you doing?

    Just curious,
