phpBB is a joy to use... but I don't know about the admin side of it.

I use it on <a href="http://www.forums.macwrite.com"; target="_blank">my forums</a> and find it's the best forum software around.

I tried invision board, phpbb, and a few other, and man were they bad on the admin side.

also vbulletin 3 is just around the corner, and is going to blow any of the free boards out of the water.

vBulletin can handle alot <a href="http://www.hometheaterforums.com"; target="_blank">Home Theater Forums</a> at any given time has over 1,000 people on-line and is reliable.

    <a href="http://www.qksrv.net/click-307161-1163318"; target="_blank">vbulletin</a> is $160, but well worth it.</strong><hr></blockquote>

I think the fact that searches don't work is not because their servers suck, but because the code doesn't scale. It took a while to search your site (Mac Write) and then I couldn't do another search for 30 seconds! You can do another one instantly in phpBB.

What is wrong with the phpBB admin interface? I have admined a few forums with it and have had no problems. What do you think it is lacking and what does vbulletin have?

    Invision kicks phpBB's ass.

UBB is awful, and vBulletin isn't that much better.

Search every 30 seconds is an admin option, I just haven't set it to a lower setting.

As for search time, it's alot faster then UBB. Searches should only have about 5-20 seconds (Depending on server load) in VB3 it has been built from the ground up, and is alot faster, and the search engine has been rebuilt from the ground up.

As for the phpbb admim, No powerful template editor like VB, and not as power as the VB admin area.

I have to disagree here - you might mean "no easy to use template editor", which is true.

But PHPBB's templates system is one of the best there is, IMO. It's really powerful, and you can do loads in it, basically making your site look however you want. You don't have to conform to VBulletin's specific code fragments.

You've got to. Otherwise, your only option is something Perl/CGI based (like UBB and we all know how good that is). UBB is so bad on the server end that my host has banned it from their shared servers. I think ikonboard is also perl/cgi based, but I could be wrong....

But, get a real host. and your problems will go away.
