At least in Australia Apple TV+ is pretty lame.

    Number of TV Shows: 8
    Number of Movies: 1

    cost AUD $8-/ month

    Netflix:
    Number of TV Shows:1700+
    Number of Movies: 3600+

    cost: AUD $10- / month

but yes apple does offer higher bitrates. ;)

Apples has a looong way to go.

How many original shows and movies did Netflix offer on day 4 of it's service existence?  Hahaha I get what you are saying but come on..

When their "Watch Now" streaming service first launched there were around a thousand titles, but no idea how many were originals.

There were zero original as far as I can remember, but they have lots of old and crap quality shows. Even now, only 1% of what Netflix offered is watchable. Meanwhile I like all 9 of AppleTV+ shows. So in terms of quality vs quantity, AppleTV+ is worth more. At least for me.

    Netflix streaming began in 2007.

House of Cards, 2013, was the first Netflix Original, and it was derived from the British program of the same name.

Considering that Apple is expected to show mostly original content, and that the service is free for one year for a family, with the purchase of any qualifying hardware product, it can be quite a bargain.

Yes, Apple does have a long way to go, but they made the correct decision to focus on original, not licensed, content, given the number of AppleTV+ compatible services that do host licensed content.

Though you'd never know that from looking at their AppleTV+ app where paid content is mixed in with your subscribed content is mixed in with content that requires subscribing to some other provider to watch it. Horrible UI that I hope they improve soon.

Then by that same token Amazon Prime Video is an amazing value, free if you pay for their Prime prepaid 2-day shipping which is what I done each year for more than a decade. I can also quickly surface the content that comes free with my subscription, and locate all the Amazon originals in a single list.

In comparison the AppleTV+ UI is really my only major complaint with Apple's service at the moment, but I still wouldn't call it "quite a bargain". It may eventually be, and perhaps soon, but at the moment not really IMHO. Extremely limited content currently comes with it.

But I'll still subscribe until I don't. I've subscribed before to the more expensive CBS+ to watch just two shows.  Maybe that's what I'll end up doing. Drop TV+ in a couple months and instead just sign up for a month here and there to binge the couple of shows I'm interested in. Too early to tell.

EDIT: Bundling AppleTV+ with Showtime might juice interest a little, tho it won't be for the current price of Apple TV+ alone. The rumors say discussions are underway to add Showtime as a bundle partner.

"But Apple’s definition of success won’t be measured simply by how many eyeballs it attracts for its new shows over the next year or two, or even how many people sign up for the service. It doesn’t just want to make enough good programming to get people to pay a $4.99 monthly subscription feeThat price is one-third of what WarnerMedia will charge for HBO Max ($14.99), well below Netflix’s most popular plan ($12.99), and a couple dollars cheaper than Disney+ ($6.99) — but it comes with a much smaller library of TV shows and movies.. Instead, a key part of its overall strategy is to use its flashy originals as a billboard for Apple’s bulked-up TV app. Much the way Google moved early in the internet age to establish itself as the dominant power for web search, Apple wants to become the home page for video — the place people go to discover, buy, and watch everything streaming, anywhere, whether it’s a show, a movie, or a network. And while it hasn’t said so yet, many experts think the company’s bigger plan is to combine several or even all of its media-centric offerings — music, gaming, news, photo storage, TV — into one big monthly subscription bundle, assuring Apple gets your money even in years you don’t buy a new iPhone or laptop."

    and...

    "
Apple isn’t the only company trying to suck you into their TV ecosystem: Amazon’s Fire TV offers a somewhat similar form of content aggregation, even pulling in over-the-air signals if you have the right device. Cable companies such as Comcast and Cox also offer their own advanced programming guides that blend in content from a few streaming services. But Apple’s bet, as it has been for decades, is that its design and user experience will be superior to what rivals offer."

...which as you noted and I agree with, that Apple needs to clean up the UI.
