BTW, the iPod Nano was also used for fitness.  One thing that it does (currently listening to mine) that Apple Watch doesn't (and probably never will) is FM radio.

The iPod Shuffle (the last iteration clip-on version) was the best iPod for my purposes. It was simple to operate and perfect for exercise. Also, it was not as expensive as a Watch, so if it got nicked or damaged it wasn’t a big deal. I maintain Apple made a big mistake by discontinuing this model.

And I just investigated the availability of these (officially discontinued in 2017). The old model is still sold by some retailers for $169, which is outrageous... I think it used to be $69 or $99, if I’m not mistaken.

Really nothing would prevent Apple from reviving the Shuffle in a sport watch-like form, with the addition of Bluetooth for the AirPods. Nothing prevents it other than they want to upsell customers on a watch that costs $199 to $299 instead. :(  I think getting people into an iPod Armband would be a good way to eventually get them into an Apple Watch, but hey, what do I know.
