Censorship?

OK, i remember a time when the only word that was censored on these boards was "fuck"....

now we have things like [quote] Or if you want to think of it another way, if the Yankees were to release most of their pitchers, Wells, Clemens, Mussina, Pettite, Hitch****, El Duque, Lilly, and Mendoza then their payroll would be equivalent to the Mariners' <hr></blockquote> showing up in threads....



We are [mostly] adults here, and i think we have all seen some bad words from time to time. I dont see why words need to be censored at all... I think it is rediculous....



any chance that this will be changed? Or is it part of some agreement with MacNN or something...

    Whoops.



    The profanity filter is a delicate issue here, but it does have one little feature that should prevent things like "Hitch****" from happening.



    Ideally, we would rather not have it at all. We didn't have anything filtered initially. Unfortunately, things are rarely ideal. But this is an all-ages board, and certain words did start to get used a little too frequently, so we've leaned on it a little more.



    I'll fix that little bug in the filter, though. It shouldn't censor Hitch****.

    I was on my way to this forum and Paul beat me to it. I think the profanity filter is dumb. There aren't a huge number of kids here, especially not young ones. And even so, you can say ass on tv. But not here. Besides, I can't think of anyone who hasn't seen "fuck" before, and especially not here. Even if there's a lot of profanity being used, they're just words. I don't think anybody's mom is going to sue because they learned a dirty word on AppleInsider.

    It's a pretty standard non-slang term. While possesing a pejorative connotation, it's a pretty standard descriptor, you can even find it in some translations of the bible.

    just to keep things straight, is there any chance you guys would post a list of the censored words in the FAQ or something?....



    I mean you dont have to go into much detail, for example things like f*ck, *ss, b*tch, sh*t, and c*ck are all censored...

    anything else?

    another forum that i am on, one comprised of mainly women, has everything censored!! i cant even write "hell" on that other forum (even when we are referring to heaven and hell)! but it can get annoying since, being a new yorker, i like to swear a lot, naturally.



    although it may not be completely without its limitations, i can appreciate the liberties we do have here at AI.

    Unfortunately, UBB doesn't include a moron filter, so the Powers That Be decided to switch on censoring.
