Two new videos on Apple's YouTube channel show that the iPad Pro is a serious contender for a laptop replacement and even more so after Wednesday's update.

Apple's two new ads show what the iPad Pro can do

The first, titled "iPad Pro -- How to correctly use a computer," takes jabs at all the ways we were taught to use a computer correctly. It shows that the iPad is every bit as capable while allowing users freedom and a plethora of tools a standard computer user wouldn't have access to. The song featured in the ad is "Jam for Bwengo (Senbe Remix)" by Naran Ratan.

The second, titled "iPad Pro -- Your next computer is not a computer" is a high-energy look at all the options the iPad Pro brings to the table. The description reads, "The world's most advanced mobile display. So fast most PC laptops can't catch up. Pro cameras and LiDAR Scanner for game-changing AR experiences. And you can use it with touch, Apple Pencil, a keyboard, and now a trackpad."

Apple has revamped its flagship iPad Pro models and given them a dual-camera system that includes a 10 megapixel ultra-wide and 12 megapixel wide lens. Previously the iPad Pro featured only a single 12-megapixel camera on the rear, so this adds widescreen and zoom to the range. The new update also adds a LiDAR Scanner, which is used for depth sensing and so helps facilitate Augmented Reality work.

Running the newly updated iPadOS 13.4, the 11-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models now fully support trackpads and one is included the new Magic Keyboard for iPad. The separate keyboard is backlit, and attaches magnetically with a cantilever that lets the iPad Pro float above the keys.

The 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is from $999. Pre-orders start on Wednesday, and the devices will be available beginning March 24. The required iPadOS 13.4 will be available on the same day.

The new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro won't be available until May, however. It will cost $299 for the model made for the 11-inch iPad Pro, and $349 for the 12.9-inch edition.

Would like to know what the keyboard is like - if it's anything like the overpriced one that came with the last Pro refresh (which I bought) I'll pass and wait for a third party one, I pretty much don't use it because of the feel of the keys.

So now I’m wondering why bother using ARM chips in the MacBooks at all, if this thing is just going to keep getting faster and now has a keyboard and trackpad.

That new Apple-designed cursor is DOPE!!

I noticed it uses a A12Z chip. Why didn't they use A13X? What does it mean?

Per Apple: "A full-size keyboard designed for iPad Pro brings individual hard keycaps and a scissor mechanism with 1 mm travel for a responsive, comfortable, and quiet typing experience."

Because a dot is better than an arrow that actually points at something?  What does a circle point at?

With the new version of iPadOS, can I spellcheck using *only* the keyboard like I can on first-party macOS apps (and those that enable a context menu shortcut)?

    Because if I can't, then it's not a computer.

Given the last five years of MacBook updating frequency and what you got, it could almost smell like a plan. A bad smell.

To toot my own horn, it seems Apple did what I posted I thought they’d do — not introduce an arrow pointer, which is very precise and small, but instead keep the approximately finger-sized pointer, as seen in the accessibility version we have today. This prevents UI tap target elements from getting smaller.

Yes, when the platform is designed for touch tap targets and not mouse pointer arrows. It’s a less-precise platform, and that’s a good thing, since it’s designed for touch as a first-class use case.

In the video it seems iPadOS also has roll-over effects, similar to tvOS. So when you move the pointer over a button or icon, it visually shows it.

Nah, not the definition of a computer.

It's the same architecture as the A12X but with an extra GPU.

The commercials have the users lift the iPad off this trackpad case without the case moving, or the users holding onto the case. I thought the magnets were pretty strong. Wonder how heavy this case is going to be? 2 lb? 3 lb?

So why can't an iPad Pro run Xcode? What is the fundamental failing of iOS that Apple is unable to correct which prevents it running a full development environment? It has a keyboard and track pad. It has plenty of RAM and storage. The CPU and GPU are well up to the task. So the limitation has to be in iOS.

In apparent eagerness to diminish iOS, your statements make assumptions that are not facts.

Personally, as a full-time developer, I have little interest in ditching my desktop IDE for a puny tablet screen. It's simply a matter of inches.

Sure but in the good times to come when we can move about again, I would love to work on apps on  my iPad Pro as I sat on the train even if I prefer my 32" wide monitor in my office.

When was the last time you pointed at something with the curser arrow? Seriously, whatever the shape you put it on top of the document, the application, the file folder, the word, the cell, and click. A dot is as good as anything. Plus having it morph into shadowing whatever it’s over will help in making sure you are where you want to be.
