I agree with groverat, no avatars. The avatars people will choose are the reason I have GIF animations disabled.
Also, it will cut down on bandwidth requirements Remember, we have modem users here, as wrong as they might be, and every little kilobyte counts for them
No avatars, but perhaps a **small** graphics sig? I dunno if this is already allowed or not actually, I didn't check the prefs page thoroughly, but I haven't seen anyone else use them so I assume that they aren't.
Well, I was thinking more of a fixed size avatar option? Not the out of control avatars that stretch the screen or take forever to download. Usually, there is a size limit you can set to them. I don't think it will take up that much bandwidth if they are small. I guess I am spoiled but, how many people use dialup these days?
I am a bit surprised over the rejection over avatars. The reasons not to have this option seem questionable.
I am not sure what keeping AI attractive and bandwidth issues has to do with the use of avatars if they are restricted to a set size, etc. I just thought that a little color and image would not only add to a member's personality, but would also add a little life to the monotonous dull gray look of the board. I've seen many forums that were very nicely laid out and also used avatars.
As for those who are on dialup, I didn't think the number was so high. Is broadband still not available is most areas? I can't see any other reason not to have it since it's not that more expensive than most dialup ISPs.
I can find unlimited dial-up for about $12/mo. Broadband here in Boston runs about $30/mo. on average. $20/mo. is a lot, especially when you're poor
There are 50 posts on a given page before the thread adds a page... say each was from a unique person, and each, on average, was 5k. So that's 250k worth of additional data for the end user to downlaod.
Also, does UBB even have the option for Avatars? If not, you'd have to modify the source, which is probably more trouble than it is worth. I say KISS.
the day you see avatars on this board is the day i resign.
no amount of popular opinion will sway me on this. it's fugly. go to spymac if you want avatars and that kind of crap.
yes, i'm a minimalist. so shoot me.
2. ubb doesn't do avatars. oops.

1. Now, now - no need to get all bitchy (or arrogant and cocky for that matter).
2. Not all forums that use avatars are fugly - that's just your opinion. There is a way to do things tastefully in a minimalist fashion. If you don't want them fine, but...
3. Since UBB doesn't do avatars - this suggestion could have been answered from the very start without out any further discussion.

The reason I don't have broadband is that it is too restrictive as far as what I can do. There is no reaosn at all why I shouldn't be able to run a web, ftp, etc. server on my computer. Also, Earthlink broadband isn't available where I am (I would want Earthlink for easy transition and dialup access away from home).

Patchouli, look at your location for a moment. Have you ever been in the country? Here in Vermont, it's a modem, or DirecPC. Yes I hear they're working on Mac compatibility but for $60 a month I think.
I'd vote for Avatars if it wasn't for bandwith if they were small and inconspicuous. Jonathan I believe in you And your ability to implement things stylishly Just letting you know!

I second the request.

Last I checked a good 60% of the country did...

Your boss is on dial-up.
I vote against.

I agree 100%
