Just as stupid idea as notch on the phone, so seems like something Apple would do.

A notch would be the continuation of a design blunder. Here’s to hoping it will disappear on the iPhone 12.
It’s not a blunder, it’s a real-world design limitation. No different than the fact a rear-view mirror (or automated safety camera array, like in Subarus) takes up space in the windshield.

When the tech evolves to allow them to remove it they obviously will.

Not stupid in the slightest. It’s an effective solution to the problem at hand. I’m guessing unlike you, I actually have an iphone, with the notch, since the X, and it’s completely fine. I never, ever notice it. More, I get a device without a forehead or chin. That’s a win.

Prolly a reason your knockoff shops copied it too.

My Macbook spends most of its time in clamshell mode. Face ID would be a waste.

Yeah, same.  Would sure be nice if Apple made an affordable display with a built in webcam that also provides power and functions as a Thunderbolt dock, that could be upgraded to include a Face Id array.

Touch ID on the newer MacBooks works just fine,  I use it frequently and it is super fast to get back in.   The idea of putting face-id in a laptop just seems "over the top" in more ways than one.

AppleInsider folks, I really don't recall Apple every implementing any feature that they patented long ahead of a release, can you? These patents cover thinking territory, but like a lot of companies, Apple patents ideas they consider potentially lucrative or that would infringe on realms of thinking they've explored so they can later enforce and benefit monetarily. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but my experience is that just because Apple registers a patent doesn't mean they're "planning" to do anything with the patent themselves as your headline declares.

you could cut out a small black piece of cardboard Shaped like a notch and tape to your laptop screen to have an idea of the outcome.  I’m not liking the idea of a notch on laptops.  If you do,  enjoy...
... or simply trim a strip of black electrical tape to replicate Apple’s new Magic Notch™ and even you can start impressing friends and family with your “upgraded“ Mac.

So it will no longer be practical to have a little sticky over the camera to prevent unwanted snooping? Dear do-dad manufacturers, please create a product, perhaps a physical slider, to solve this 😅
