Interesting article. Regarding the introduction of the iPad 4 so soon after the iPad 3, my recollection is that it caused a near riot in some circles. I don’t imagine they’ll do that here - the lidar component is probably there for an as-yet unannounced app probably to debut with the iPhone 11
Apple has before kept a tight release cycle on iPad. The iPad 3 and iPad 4 were released in March and November during the same year where Apple made the switch to Lightning and bumped the processor from the A5X to the A6X processors. A similar processor jump could be feasible this year.
Gosh that seems like eons ago now. The 3 was a rare dude from Apple. I would love to hear the stories and arguments regarding that product launch.
My guess is that was a one time exception and not the norm. I’d be surprised to see it done again on now a more mature product such as the iPad Pro.
It actually wasn’t a dud. Reviews were positive, retina on an iPad was welcomed. It sold very well, but was soon replaced by a Lightning-equipped model with better processing and thermals. Techies on sites like this cared, but normals didn’t.
What is the purpose of the the LiDAR scanner? Its dots are further apart than the previous iteration so it produces lower resolution scans of the location. The range measured is likely a lot more accurate though so objects on the screen "stick" to the surfaces in the image more precisely. However if that is the purpose of the LiDAR, what about the inside-out tracking of a modern VR headset like the Quest? It uses multiple cameras and AI processors to accurately measure its position to the world and accomplishes even better tracking accuracy than LiDAR. For example, when I put on the Quest a few feet away from where it was last used, it still knows where it is and shows the safe area cage superimposed over a grayscale 3D image of the world. It is pretty impressive and costs a fraction of the price of an iPad Pro.
And does your Quest VR headset run apps? Can you draw on it? Etc etc. Absurd comment, of course an accessory is cheaper than a computing device.
I have a 2017 and the specs in this 2020 version is NOT enough for me to make a purchase.
And how about fixing Safari. I have seen more and more pop ups and ads over the years. When I first purchased an iPad (guessing around 2012) it was a nice experience. Clean would be the way I describe it. I bought it for surfing the web, checking my email, watching podcasts and movies. Now its too much like a laptop. The adblocker Apps are useless because most the websites wont let me continue unless I deactivate the adblocker!
I, too, have the 10.5” 2017 iPad Pro and although it’s working fine, I just traded it in for the 2020 12.9” model.

This isn’t an iPad issue. It’s just that websites are getting much more aggressive in trying to shove ads down your throat because ads are what support their revenue stream. Yeah, I hate it too but we all knew the free ride wouldn’t last forever.
Original iPad Pro 12.9" 128GB w/Cellular and five years later it's still working strong. Who buys a new iPad every time a new one ships? I see little reason to upgrade, I am going to wait a bit longer to see if there really is a major change coming. I have admired the new small bevel and curved corners and the magnetic Pencil mount with inductive charging and the increased speed, the FaceID. But for the most part, meh. It's not enough to make me drop the cash on a new one. So long as it runs the latest iPadOS it is meeting my needs. I can wait for the next revolutionary step.
I'm still waiting for an iMac Pro hardware refresh before I buy one of those to replace my 2010 Mac Pro which I can't upgrade to Mojave nor Catalina and which barely runs High Sierra. I've had to disable the automatic software update because I have to wait a week or two after every update to install the Nvidia drivers for my rather old video card which I had to add just to get High Sierra working. Only to find out that Apple with Mojave / Catalina refuse to budge and allow Nvidia drivers to work. I can't afford the new Mac Pro that is just insane! I may build an AMD rig and run Linux on it for the heavy lifting outside the iMac Pro I would love to buy if they would freaking update it!
Meanwhile... CoVID-19 happened and my bonus is cooling its jets because of the financial uncertainty ahead. Not to mention the difficulty sourcing parts to build my next powerful workstation. I am thankful I am still employed and able to work from home. But every business is going to feel the financial impact from this virus. I am not spending money unless I absolutely have to at the moment. I think my employer is doing very well but for how much longer, I cannot say.

Dewme, I get what your saying. I dont have a Mac so i cant compare use of Safari other than on the iPad. Just wish adblocker Apps were useful.

I thought @razorpit was saying that it was a rare DUDE, as in a machine that is hard to find because it was not on the market long. A rare dude you don't see often.
