No one could be adequately trusted with this information. Once it’s data, it can be hacked, backdoored, subpoenaed, leaked, etc.
That's why it stays on your phone.
If you’re identifying people who have self-identified as sick with COVID, you’re using that data.
100% agree that if that was what they were doing.
    BUT THEY AREN'T.
Did you actually read how this works? If you did you should read it again because you don't understand what you read. They are not identifying people with COVID.

"The opt-in system uses Bluetooth to transmit a randomized and anonymous identifier to nearby devices. A user can then choose to upload their anonymized data, which is then broadcast to other devices. If a match is found based on time spent and distance between nearby devices, a user will be told that they may have been exposed to a person — whose identity is not shared — with the virus.

Why? This is a service that is completely unnecessary.  #DoomedToFailure

Yey, we could just continue to huddle in our houses letting the virus have free reign.

On the other hand, those countries who have successfully managed the virus like China and Korea have used social distancing, extensive community testing and contact tracing.  The first is just a stop gap to slow it down and everyone agrees it can't go on long term.  The latter two are necessary to keep the virus contained by keeping the infectious from infecting sometimes dozens of others.

    * Those successful countries also supplied the community with protective supplies:  Masks, gloves and antiseptic.

So far all the U.S. has done is social distancing and even that started late.  It's why we lead the world!

To say that testing and contact tracing are "unnecessary" is delusional.
