I don't find it offensive, because I don't go around looking for benign words and phrases to offend me. In other words, I'm not hypersensitive, especially on the internet.

Is profanity classy? No. Is it an indicator of intelligence? Generally not. Coolness? I don't think so, but the point is arguable among different crowds.

Anyway, there's no free speech on a private server, the rules are there as a courtesy, and they can be followed when and if a moderator wishes. If the particular rule that was 'enacted' in censoring this word was enacted to the fullest extent, I'm sure we'd be soing quite a bit more moderation, for very little effect (most who are adult enough to consider the profanity inappropriate have also dealt with these types of things enough times to not let it bother them). So it doesn't happen... unless, of course, there is demand, and interest drawn toward the issue, which this thread caused. So the moderators just did something about it.

I see both sides of the issue.

I hope people start to take advantage of this reaction more, and the moderators get swamped and tired of censoring silly words that we've all heard before and shouldn't be so highly bothered and sensitive about. Maybe then people will get over it, or better yet, find more articulate ways to express their feelings in the first place, than profanity. (Hint: it's not as hard as you think.)

One four letter word on an internet forum hardly counts as pyschological abuse. If someone is psychologically traumatized from reading it, they had existing problems to begin with.

Sometimes "profanity" can be used to most accurately depict how we feel about a certain issue.

That's an arguable point. You can never have too much clarity; profane language is often overused and hackneyed to the point of a very loose definition. I won't even mention that many people will write off your opinion/point as stupidity when you choose to resort to being profane about it?it's too easy that way. If you 're really trying to get a point acrost (and you may not be, subconsciously, trying to succeed in doing so), you could think of a better way to put things.

For heaven's sakes, just try before you discount it.

Look, guys, we really don't care what you think about the word, usage of the word, usage of similar words, etceteras. It's not open for debate here. This is a closed issued.

We don't want that type of behaviour on these boards.

So you can continue to beat it into the ground all you want, but we've made up our minds. That's why we wrote the <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/guidelines.html"; target="_blank">posting guidelines</a> that you have seen at the top of the site for a while.

If there are any other questions in regards to this issue, or if you for some reason cannot understand what we ask of you in regards to your personal behaviour on these boards, e-mail or private message me.

Dang, no need to get out the attitude. I think we all get what you're trying to say. We were just discussing it, maybe discussing the pointlessness of prifanity, and in my case at least, the instances on which these posting guidelines are followed (when somebody complains, or it annoys/offends one of the mods personally).

Hm, more thoughts. I've wanted to say this for a while:

All of the mods here are cool, and can be decent folk... but what I don't understand is why, once some of them become a moderator, they get this power trip thing where they think anyone who wants to discuss is automatically disagreeing or challenging or "usurping" them (to quote another thread), and they have to constantly assert themselves and act like they're really putting their foot down? Lighten up, you're a maintainer for an online bulletin board about computer rumors.

[Just to clarify before I get flamed, I'm only talking about some behavior of some of the mods, and it's all my own personal observations. kthxbye.]

I think most of the moderators assert themselves in such a way in Suggestions is because people come here with a problem like the one in this thread, and we are expected to remedy that situation. In a case such as this, we are expected to uphold a set of guidelines we have posted, and if we do not show some respect to those, then who will?

And discussing the use of profanity is fine... it's just not terribly appropriate for the Suggestion forum. The only reason we would really be discussing this would be if a suggestion were being made - hence the title of the forum

I suggest we re-examine the the guideline that prohibits certain indefinable excessive profanity.
