They will never be a market leader in the vehicle market.

Yeah right, but I honestly don't think an Apple Car would be as revolutionary as the iPhone. With iPhone, they completely reimagined the mobile phone . When it comes to Automobiles, this thing has already been done by Tesla. Electrification and autonomy changed the centuries old model of how car should be. Anything over this wouldn't be as revolutionary as the Tesla. Tesla has already changed the automotive industry forever (or its in the process of).
I equate that ‘Apple Car’ image to the poop emoji ... as a car guy, I want less automation, and more driver-oriented experience and performance.
I think the problem is that we're ('car-guys') becoming an endangered species.
But, I totally agree, I want less automation and a good driving experience. Just give me something like a BMW E90-series with an EV drivetrain, and I'm in. But, even makers like BMW seem to be going more for the masses these days than the driver.

What approaching singularity? Also, if the problem of AI is ever solved (which I don't think it will be), it won't be a matter of computing performance that solves it.

They are good wishful thinkers, though. Some of the pioneers are getting a bit more realist, though.

The fatty nano at least had a logic behind it.
Have you ever seen the stuff that comes out of industrial design competitions, though? It was probably created by one of those people... basically before the reality of real-life sets in.

Yeah, but Tesla gets a bunch of stuff wrong in terms of cars. Remember that a couple of the top Apple execs are car nuts, so while that doesn't necessarily mean they'll succeed in doing it right, they are probably aware of what aspects are being done wrong.
I guess my concern is whether Apple still has the 'human interface' chops left to actually rethink something AND actually do it right. If they can't do that with their OSs and apps anymore, why a car?
Apple only licenses interfaces to other systems like CarPlay, AirPlay, HomeKit, etc. They never license out technology. The few times they did they were badly burned by it. Apple’s business model isn’t compatible with licensing tech. This will certainly be 100% an Apple product. That doesn’t mean they wont buy a chassis from another automaker like what Tesla did when they started out. In fact looking at Tesla would be a good place to see how Apple might approach this. On the other end of the spectrum, Apple has enough cash to buy all three of the big automakers. They could buy one and turn all of those vehicles in to Apple cars. That would be similar to what they did with Beats.

Heh, yeah, people saying it isn't possible seem to be lacking a bit of imagination as to the options available. No doubt, they could just buy up some automaker (with many decades of experience) and redirect them.
I really think this is just fantasy still, to produce all the components for a car isn't something that Apple could hide very well. Maybe they will make a prototype and approach a manufacturer to license.
Very early on there was a really attractive concept image of what an Apple Car would look like………but it seems forever now that everyone writing about the mystery car uses this horrific image. Imagine a head-on crash with virtually no front end as this image shows. If and when an actual car is released, it needs to put the fine Tesla designed cars to shame. But most importantly it needs to be THE FULLY AUTONOMOUS CAR the world's been waiting for.
Well....it’s gonna be a longggggg wait. By that time Tesla would be logging miles and miles of robo taxis and autonomous vehicles, my 1 cent hehe
Right, Apple always late to the game... and then they wind up dominating the market, my 1 cent hehe

Well the Singularity is something that needs to be proven ( and Moore's law is dead).
They will never be a market leader in the vehicle market.

You're basically doubling down on the Colligan quote by failing to imagine a situation where they do reimagine the car, or at the very least produce something markedly different than a Tesla.

Exactly. Currently, it is sci-fi. And, outside a few starry-eyed tech futurists, I think there is a lot more soberness about even how far AI tech will even be useful. I really wish the ML term were more widely used, as it conveys the situation much more accurately.
