Any chance these changes will be an upgradable feature for current owners of the Pro?
Yeah, I wondered that too.  Listening, it seemed to be inferred it was a software update, not new hardware so perhaps it is built in already.  Fingers crossed.
It wasn’t inferred, it was explicitly stated that the feature is the result of new algorithms. It will be enabled through a firmware update.

Wow, the power of auto-suggestion.  I had my Airpod Pros in listening to the KeyNote and when they did the piece on the spatial surround sound the audio seemed to change during the demo and I swear it was all around me!
Since it will be using using tuned frequencies in software to simulate the spatial sound, there’s no reason they can’t already simulate that to some extent by applying the algorithm to the sound they played on the keynote.

Sounds like something which will make the audio sound barely perceptibly better, while taking up a load of battery.  I'll give it a try, but I hope you can turn it off.

I swore she said it was via firmware update for the Airpod Pros.. All the articles I am looking at this morning say an update also. I am looking forward to this myself!

This is one of those innovations up there with Visual Voicemail and attention correction. Genius.

JFC. That's like going to a nice theater and saying "Dolby surround? I guess that sounds better than 2 channel stereo, but I'll probably just turn it off". Why would you NOT want this?

One of the many businesses I have owned over my lifetime was a recording studio where rock bands were recorded on 1" reel to reel tape.  This was 40 years ago.  We tested recorded binaural recording.  We used two high-end cardioid microphones positioned at 180°. Listened to on stereo headphones you could close your eyes and hear someone walk around you in a 3D space.  It is staggering how long it has taken for this to come to the masses.
