I have to sort of apologize for my last comment. Maybe 6 months ago people had reason to complain but TV+ is really coming along. But what did we expect? It's an all-original service so it naturally was gonna take time. People were complaining day one. I bet Apple is prepping for the end of the year where most of their TV+ subscribers free year ends. They'll hook us in by then.
no doubt Apple is saving up a bit of content for when everyone’s 12 months end and they have to start deciding whether it is worth paying a subscription for. becuase additions have been pretty few and far between since launch.
To be frank, if there isn’t enough for you to watch something new say, at least once or twice a week, very few will pony up the $. Even Foundation isn’t coming until 2021.
And that is even before you consider audience limitations for Very Public Television content.

    Watched it this afternoon.

I agree with the others here:  it could have been great, and had some excellent moments, but it was too short.  I also agree that this is a movie that belongs either in a proper theater or in a great home theater setup (which I don't have).  This movie is better if you're "immersed."

The movie represents a tense ~48 hour crossing of the Atlantic with a pack of U-boats hounding a convoy of dozens of ships protected by just 4 destroyers.  Hanks as the senior caption of the 4 destroyers (which is a little weird since it's his first command) is on his feet the entire time as the ship repeatedly goes on high alert as they encounter the German subs.  It's fascinating watching the complex operations of the crew as they struggle with weather, poor visibility, relatively primitive sonar and radar, and skilled opponents.  You can imagine how tense these crossings must have been without a moment of respite as their destroyers tried to protect their massive, unwieldy flocks for 2 straight days.

Except it doesn't feel like an epic race against time because it's well under an hour and a half of actual action.  Hanks' character is presented as an iron man of endurance to the point that his feet bleed from the 2 straight days of activity.  Except it doesn't feel like 2 straight days; it feels like a stressful hour-long battle.

Now if they included another 30 minutes of the same type of (very well done and engaging) action, we'd probably be complaining that it was repetitive and overlong.  If those there the two options, shorter is probably better, but I expect a better screenwriter could have made this more "epic" without being repetitive.

I'm glad I watched it, I'd recommend it, and I'll probably watch it again.  But I feel disappointed that it wasn't "amazing."  At least no one will accuse Apple of screwing this up.  It doesn't sound like they had the slightest influence on the content of what was shown.

Hanks as the senior caption of the 4 destroyers (which is a little weird since it's his first command)

This is set early after US entry into WW2. At that time there were a stack of career navy people that had seniority but not a lot of experience in command. These were slotted in to positions at their level of their seniority. It is the way navies work.  In the book there is a fair bit of the captain’s self doubt because of his awareness of his lack of experience, particularly compared with his “junior” commanders on the British destroyers he is in the position of issuing orders to.

I just realized, this is Apple's first "big league" movie but it wasn't filmed or directed for Apple TV+ but bought from someone else.

So nobody has considered the possibility that the "overlords" and "whip masters" comments by Hanks were made in jest? Do people also think Craig Federighi was being sincere when he said the Apple marketing team was on drugs when they came up with Big Sur?
Given that the Spielberg-Hanks series was announced about 9 months ago, I assume Hanks' comments were a combination of disappointment (that the movie didn't get a theatrical release) and jest (Apple "Overlords").
I don't think he walked back his comments as much as just issued a clarification - albeit one that was probably mandated by either Apple's, or his PR.

Thanks for that.  That makes sense.  Hanks obviously plays a guy with decades of experience, but they make a big deal about this being his first time in command. I didn't think it was a plot "glitch" but as I thought about it I didn't understand why these more experienced captains were taking direction from Hanks.

Only movies which have premiered in a theater are eligible for an Oscar. And the Academy Awards aren’t exactly the mark of excellence they used to be 40-50 years ago. They’re an award decided by and given to movie industry insiders. Worthless, IMO.
Except for the 2021 Academy Awards, from reading the article it seems like Greyhound “should” be able to be nominated.

    https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/28/21240422/oscars-streaming-theaters-rules-2021-netflix-digital-release-academy
If theaters don't open this year, there will be no academy awards - or else they will make an exception to the rules for this year only and let streaming releases be nominated. Hanks shouldn’t be denied his shot at a best screenplay Oscar if his work is good.
A movie being “good” isn’t the criteria for an Oscar. It’s all subjective and it’s all decided by industry insiders.
Yes that's because it is an "industry" award show and not movie theatre goer show or a movie critics award show so. What is your point different industries should not be allowed to celebrate who they believe excelled each year?

Just watched this fantastic movie.  There were zero issues with the soundtrack.  It was totally synchronized with the film.   Tom Hanks was excellent.

Sure, if you ignore the day/night cycles and time stamps throughout the film and the half dozen meals not eaten by Hanks. :D
