What a shame that they are forced to use Apple’s services. There oughta be a law! Maybe a regulated economy where the government tells Apple (and Airbnb) what they can charge.
Well Apple could well lose an anti trust case, so I suppose that’s a law.
Apple's rules on this are all over the place. Only if they host content ( as they do with in app purchases in most cases) should the fee be more than 5%.
How in the hell could you make any recommendations on fees if you don’t know their costs?
Simple, the cost isnt 30% to not host digital content created, hosted and fulfilled by others. Its not 5% either. But I am nice.
You are shooting from the hip from a completely uninformed position.

So what, besides the app itself, of Netflix’s digital content does Apple host?

It doesn’t hold any content, but it isn’t charging for storing the content; it’s charging for the subscription, and only if you sign up through the store. If you don’t want to pay then get your users to sign up through your website.
They could always go Android-only if they’re that unhappy with Apple. Otherwise, screw ‘em.
Airbnb will pay a commission there too. Apple published a list of all of the app stores and marketplaces, almost all of which charged the same 30% rate. When the App Store come into existence in 2008, %30 was a bargain compared to anything else, especially compared to retail space.
30% is a good rate for listing on the app store compared to 2008, but did any store in 2008 impose a requirement that all transactions for digital goods were also subject to the same 30% rate?

I agree. If they are literally only acting as a payment processor then 30% is exorbitant, and even 5% should earn them a healthy margin.
Though perhaps an additional fee for the app developer for allowing them to run a store within a store might be called for.

Actually in the case of Netflix you can’t register on Apple devices. I know that in cases where you can the 30% is charging for the subscription or once off payment. The question is, is that justified in all cases.
Talking software not services per se... If any of these clowns had tried to run a software company back in the days prior to the internet let alone the App Store they'd know what a bargain 30% is. I did and know! The cost of marketing, printing manuals, booths at trade shows, sales staff, flights, hotels ... I could go on. It runs into many hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
The price you sell at takes into account the overheads. We survived back when you were lucky to net 30%. Today to can net 70% the price the market allows you to set.
Not to mention the thousands of software titles and services that simply would not exist if they'd had to deal with the afore mentioned overheads that were there prior to the App Store.

With that distinction, software as a product not as a service, you are right.
