AirPods share of market shrinks to one-third, down from nearly half in 2019

In a growing overall market, Apple is losing its grip on the true wireless earbud market as competitors release cheaper alternatives to Apple's AirPods.

Apple AirPods market shrinks to one third, down from nearly half in 2019

It's well documented that Apple helped to establish the true wireless earphones market. In 2019, Apple saw over 80% growth in AirPods sales in the fourth quarter, selling 43.4 million units. AirPods accounted for nearly half of all TWS earphone sales in 2019.

However, even though Apple is expected to sell 82 million units this year, its iron-clad grip on the TWS earbud market is loosening and may be down to just one-third of the total market in 2020.

There are likely a few contributing factors. AirPods are still priced well above the $100 range, making them a significant purchase in a challenging economic environment. A pair of AirPods Pro are $250, making them even more of an investment.

As Bloomberg points out, cheaper alternatives from Chinese rivals are beginning to claim a significant chunk of sales. Xiaomi Corp. holds a 10% share, while Samsung has grown to 6% thanks to its own Galaxy Buds line of earphones.

Android users aren't flocking to AirPods and AirPods Pro either, as many of the devices' benefits are exclusively for iPhone owners.

"The low-to-mid end segment including Chinese brands and U.S. makers such as JLab is taking away share from the premium market," Counterpoint analyst Liz Lee told Bloomberg. Samsung is expected to double its TWS sales in 2020 from 8 million to 17 million. "We believe that Samsung can attract more users, especially Android phone users, if it provides a wider selection of TWS devices from mid to high-end with at least two or three variations."

The release of the "AirPods X" could help Apple regain some ground, but as long as viable true wireless earbuds are under $100, Apple may still see its market share continue to shrink.

The data is unverifiable with concrete numbers from Apple. Apple hasn't reported sales figures for its hardware in some time. Additionally, it isn't clear how giveaways of Samsung Buds to Galaxy S10 phone orderers, or back-to-school giveaways of AirPods have altered marketshare.

If it'd been any other company the news would have read "Company X nearly doubles […]"; but with Apple it always seem to end up with some expert proclaiming the one true path for Apple to recover after the failure that it is to double their sales and making even more of a profit than ever.

If everybody wants a share of the pie, of course, market share shrinks. LOL

Same old story. Market share going down after creating a new category, doom scenarios awaiting around the corner. What would percentage of revenue / profit say? Ah, thought so...

I haven’t fled to a different manufacturer - nor would I - but I’ve cooled considerably on AirPods.  A little over two years in, and one of them only lasts 15 minutes per charge now, the other one 20. I can’t make it through a daily standup without having to swap out single pods at a time, and juggle them in the charger in case the meeting runs long

As I was raised to be frugal, I’m just not seeing great bang for the buck in my particular use case (working from home, thanks COVID).  I’ve stepped back to my original wired set for now (for ambient noise rejection).  Honestly the wire is less of a hassle.

Couldn’t agree more. My AirPods became nearly useless after a little over a year of use. At the same price point there are now much higher quality true wireless earbuds. I ended up replacing my AirPods with Sennheiser’s MTW2.  Along with much better sound quality, I find the smart tap controls to be a lot more useful than the AirPods, too.  I have heard that B&O, Master & Dynamic, and Sony’s options also sound great at about the same price point.

Half of them are AirPods knockoffs. This is why I can't stand companies like Huawei who rip off Apple's work and in turn take market share from them. We reward laziness and stealing.

Huawei is a multi-billion dollar company too. They aren't like those knockoff startups from Wal-Mart. They can afford to invent.

    The "others" category.

Those cheaper knockoffs generally last a lot less time than airpods though. You would go through several pairs in the time of one set of airpods.

But it is also true that the sound performance of competitors at similar, or more worryingly, slightly lesser price points are superior.
What it comes down to is that airpods are overpriced and they need a reset.

This is also an issue for the benchmark ANC headphones like QC35s and XM3s.  Cheaper Chinese headphones like TaoTronics don’t sound as good and their ANC aren’t as good, but the are a quarter the price and the difference is not that bad, in fact for the price amazing, especially for flights or a bus trip, to justify the extra $ for many people.

Just the idea that something you're supposed to spend $200+ on can only be used for a couple years, due to short battery life, just makes this purchase option seem idiotic, unless money is no object.  Plus, everyone knows, earphones of all stripes are easily damaged and seem likely to simply fritz out, and that's why pretty decent quality wired earbuds are now at commodity-price levels ($10 or under).   Not the same line, of course, but the $90 Beats X wireless earphones I treated with kid-gloves; they simply stopped working one night as I was using them sitting in a chair (i.e., no reason), less than 6 months after the purchase.  Replaced them with $15 wired earbuds, with much better sound quality, which lasted a year (and then fritzed out for no reason, natch).

Apple AirPods are a total and complete disappointment. Very poor sound quality. Comfort and fit also is lackluster.  Many other 3rd party option for around the $30-100 price range all best what Apple offers.

To me the AirPods Pro are absolutely worth it; because they absolutely up my productivity, which (as a consultant/entrepreneur) translates to profit.

(Money/value is definitely something that I consider purchasing anything; and the AirPods Pro simply are worth it to me, as a professional tool.)

Physics is a punishing bitch.   It never deviates from reality.   In this case, the it's the reality that batteries wear out and in a superminitiarized structure it is not possible to replace that battery.

    Enjoy your wires!

You know, that sounds pretty good value to me.  One trip to the grocery store costs $200 these days.
