Low-cost Apple Watch SE brings health tracking to more users

Apple's new Apple Watch SE is aimed at getting more people into using its health features, and does so by lowering the cost to $279.

Alongside its Apple Watch Series 6, Apple has unveiled a model that lowers the entry cost for users by bringing older capabilities in a new, less expensive shell. The new Apple Watch SE offers a compelling range of health-tracking features.

"Apple Watch SE combines elements of the Series 6 design with the most essential features of Apple Watch, all at a more affordable price," said Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer. "Apple Watch SE... has everything you need to stay connected, to be more active, and to keep an eye on your health and fitness. "And like Series 6, Apple Watch SE uses our largest and most advanced Watch display, allowing you to see much more at a glance."

The new unit uses the S5 chip, versus the S6 in the new Apple Watch Series 6. While not comparing the Apple Watch SE to that new Series 6, Williams did say that the lower-cost device "uses the S5 chip for up to two times faster performance than the Series 3."

Apple has also compared the screen size of the Watch to the Series 3, noting that it is 30% larger. However, that makes it the same size as the Watches from the Series 4 onwards.

There are both Wi-Fi and cellular versions available, with the latest motion sensors. Fall Detection is supported on the Apple Watch SE, and it uses Bluetooth 5.0.

Compared to the new Apple Watch Series 6, the Apple Watch SE comes in the same sizes, and features the same Retina display -- except that it isn't always-on. It has the same high and low heart rate notifications and is water resistant up to 50 meters.

The Apple Watch Series 6 has an ECG app which the Apple Watch SE lacks, but the new lower-cost model does offer the same altimeter, which detects changes in elevation as little as a single foot.

Previously, the new lower-cost Apple Watch had been predicted to come in a plastic casing for the first time. However, all models of the Apple Watch SE have an aluminium casing, available in silver, gold, or space gray.

The new Apple Watch SE is not Apple's lowest-cost model, however. At time of writing, the Apple Store continues to sell the Apple Watch Series 3 from 2017. That's currently retailing from $199, however it lacks very many of the Apple Watch SE's features, and uses a smaller display size.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is not available. However, that was removed from sale in 2019 when the Series 5 launched.

Pricing starts at $279, with Apple Card Financing available. Pre-orders start on Tuesday, with units arriving as soon as Friday.

Didn't they say S3 is still available for $199?

    Well, I called the name.

Still no fun colors that appeal to kids. And the fact it isn't the cheapest option tells me it will appeal to adults more.

I suspect their watch design is maturing a bit now with fewer big changes compared to the early models and letting them use more established technology to give a very functional product at a compelling price.

This is a really smart move by apple since the previous price points were high enough to keep a lot of people from buying an Apple Watch. Now you can get an Apple Watch with significantly more functionality for just a bit more than a Fitbit watch.

Eventually the most capable high-end model 6 will migrate to their low-end line. And perhaps the Apple Watch 10 will be a stick-on tattoo by that time.

Too bad they still use that ugly baby toy design. But I guess it’s targeted towards elderly as a survival device so it can look like crap

Is this a good deal for a first time Apple Watch buyer?

Boy am I tired of their bloated line-ups. Three friggin’ models at the same time? Apple just can’t keep it simple. Why sell a 2017 model three years later? Those who cannot afford a certain product should probably turn to the likes of eBay for a used/refurbished unit. Yet Apple keep spreading themselves thin trying to please everyone at the expense of optimisation, simplicity, you name it...

It's not bloated. If you can't keep track of 3 models in the same ol' Good, Better, Best tiers, what can we tell ya? Thankfully you have more fingers.

Apple is hardly "spreading themselves thin" by retaining an older budget model. They don't have half of all the various crap models of Samsung phones that exist, but don't see anyone whining about them.

And the Series 3 can't be used with Family Setup because there is no cellular option. That means for a lot of people, the new SE is going to be the goto device. The series 3 is going to be only distinguished by its very cheap price (in comparison).

Agreed a 2T$ company can handle it.  It’s why they are successful.

Very tempting. We almost got AW5s last year, but in Canada that would have been over $500 each, which was a bit steep for us. Now though that same watch is ~$150 less. Very tempting.

The SE seems to have all the sensors as the 5, fall, heart rate, and such. Anyone have an idea why it doesn’t have the EKG feature? Just a certification issue or maybe they dropped it to differentiate the SE from the 6?

It also doesn't have the always-on display of the Series 5 which suggests to me that is more like the Series 4 (performance of S4 and S5 is also identical if I'm not mistaken).

LOL it isn’t just about ‘keeping track’. Clean line-ups mean better software. Even if Apple can keep up with it most independent developers don’t have such vast resources at their command. Their confusion often translates into more bugs and less optimisation. Apple’s gear is known for exactly the opposite.

Also ‘budget‘ doesn’t really belong with Apple not just because they rose to fame making premium products but also because it’s their paradigm to bring the most updates to the most devices for the longest reasonable time. Apple buyers expect a lot from an Apple product; most of them aren’t eager to compromise much. That’s why virtually any Apple issue gets immense media coverage no matter how minor it is in actual fact.

It’s also a matter of time before this begins to affect their top-of-the-line models. I hear iOS transition animations are already somewhat slow because iOS now needs to run on a selection of older / underpowered devices. Given the ever-climbing prices I can hardly imagine someone buying a $1500 phone which doesn’t run as smooth as it could just because the manufacturer decided to offer a similar experience in an entry-level model.
