Philips Hue has announced what it's calling a "voluntary replacement program," following potential problems with some Hue 40 Watt outdoor systems, including Lily Spot Lights.

Stressing that the issue concerns "very rare" circumstances, Philips Hue and the firm's parent company Signify have announced a program recalling power supply units (PSUs) from selected Hue outdoor lights. The systems affected were all sold between 2018 and 2020.

"After extensive testing," says Philips Hue in a statement, "we've discovered that in very rare cases, some Philips Hue 40 Watt outdoor power supply units (PSU) may become damaged due to water leakage and pose a safety risk if touched in wet conditions."

The companies say that "these PSUs were shipped with the base packs" of six separate Hue ranges. These are Lily Spot Lights, and the Lily XL Spot Light, plus pedestal lights Calla, Calla Large, Econic and Impress.

Philips Hue recommends switching off the PSU, then checking its four-digit production code. The first two digits refer to the year and the second to the week of manufacture.

If the year is 19 or lower, and also if the week number is 41 or lower, you need to have your unit replaced. Full details of how to return the PSU and get a free replacement are on the Philips Hue site.

Philips Hue lights were one of the first HomeKit-enabled devices. While this replacement program concerns outdoor lights, the range has many more HomeKit in-house options, which at times have been stocked in Apple Stores.
