Apple on Wednesday pushed out a new version of iOS 14.2, seemingly targeting iPhone 12 series devices that have not yet already downloaded the operating system update.

iOS 14

Designated build 18B111, the new iOS 14.2 variant appears to be a few revisions more mature than the 18B92 build that went out on Nov. 5. The update was made available to iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max handsets.

Apple does not specify what changes were made between build 18B92 and 18B111, though any modifications are thought to be minor since the update is only being offered to devices currently running iOS 14.1. Models already updated to iOS 14.2 will not be able to download the new build.

The initial iOS 14.2 iteration that went live earlier this month contained a handful of new features including new emoji, refreshed icons, people detection in the Magnifier tool, optimized AirPods charging and a Shazam option in Control Center. HomePod also received an update in that release, with its new firmware bundling in support for Intercom communications.

Bug fixes were also present in iOS 14.2, addressing a number of issues relating to the Camera app, widgets, unexpected app crashes and more.

The new iOS 14.2 build can be downloaded in Settings under "Software Update."

Well, that’s confusing. Hot my 12 Pro Max on the -3th and I “had” to download 14.2. Now they publish a “new” 14.2 that I cannot download. Strange.

So now customers have to be aware of what build number of an operating system release they are running? Yikes!

Nope. The article states you can’t update to new build if you already have 14.2. You just run software update like always and it takes care of it for you.  No need to bother with the minutia of what build number you have.

What's confusing about it?  There's literally nothing for you to do here.

Even though I am on 14.2, just for the hell of it I went to check updates....I see 14.2.1 now.

    Why no article on that?

    Downloading......

My customer support people would slap me silly if I released two different versions of software into the field with the same version number. I guess it depends on the expectations of your customers and what you've "taught" them to expect regarding versioning, e.g., major number, minor number, build number, patch number, etc. Apple can obviously sustain a looser scheme than many ISVs can due to their larger support channels. No big deal for them.
