Apple on Tuesday announced the year's most downloaded apps and games, lists topped by important productivity apps like Zoom and popular multiplayer hits including Among Us.

App Store Charts 2020

Revealed in a press release that named Apple's "Best of 2020" App Store awards, the year's most downloaded apps and games reflect trends shaped by a global pandemic.

Leading the free charts is Zoom, a video conferencing app that businesses, government, and individuals quickly adopted as coronavirus lockdown orders forced people inside and away from others. Food ordering service DoorDash was another company that experienced a boom thanks to the pandemic, as did Amazon and mobile payments apps Venmo and Cash App.

Entertainment and social networking apps were big players in 2020, with TikTok and Disney+ joining stalwarts YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Netflix and Spotify. Widgetsmith, which rose to fame thanks to iOS 14's customizable home screen widgets, also made the cut.

Messenger, Gmail, Google Maps, Google, Google Meet, and WhatsApp rounded out the top free apps list.

The App Store's top paid charts shows a hodgepodge of apps ranging from stargazing tools to "Star Wars" stickers featuring the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian." TouchRetouch led the pack, followed by: Among Us! ranked as the year's top free game, followed by:

Girls don't know what sex is!! They're innocent flowers! At least that's what white knights tell me on here.

It's really sad when Apple Pay Cash is getting demolished by crappy invasive and money apps.

Apparently people like watching stars (and are willing to pay to do it better).  3 star gazing apps making the cut in the paid category is a it of a surprise for me.  Typically there is one app per category that blows the others away.

First, the data reported here says nothing about Apple Pay versus Venmo or others since the Apple app doesn't require an App Store download.

Second, cross-platform apps will almost always beat platform-specific apps when for things like payment and messaging.  I don't get to choose what phone my dealer or bookie uses.  If they want Venmo or PayPay because they don't have iPhones, that's how I pays them.
