The economics of the M1 most certainly are intertwined with the A series chips, but Apple did not simply take an A14 and plop it into a MacBook Air. They furthered the design of both the processor and the GPU to make it worthy of a MacBook. Regardless, I’m quite certain that Apple has done a cost-benefit analysis of the issue and we all get to benefit from it.
It would be wonderful if any cost savings realized by Apple would translate into lower prices. The MacBooks are wonderful machines, but the cost is a disincentive for many people and lower costs could help to further the platform.
With M1, Apple is going to turn MACs(especially MBA,MBP) into iPhone like release schedule, features update, performance improvements,sale,upgrade,trade-in so people don't have to wait for the next big thing in MAC cycle but just buy when you need and when want to upgrade, sale current at better resale value.
More deeper you know Apple's M1 strategy/direction, less to feel complaining and better you like, embrace the direction..
