well....I don't know what to say....It's sad to see the "behind the scenes" where bush is jovial, especially right before he orders the strike.

the cbc coverage of this announcement went live while the floor director was still counting down from 10... funnily enough, i was almost expecting another ~whoops, mike open~ presidential gaffe like reagan's eerily gleeful "we begin bombing (the then "Evil Empire" of the Soviet Union) in 5 minutes" and GWB's "major league a**hole" quip.

strangely surreal to register more of these clips now.

frickin' amateurs... or embarassingly slow learners.

    the mike/camera is ALWAYS on.

any Yarruppeans see these live? did the presenters comment?

    any archived linkage?

Please remove the goggles with which you view the world, they're obviously not working.

Once again shoving your useless two cents in where it isn't appropriate.

Being offended by this is not the sole position of a leftist or anyone else. You are implying that leftists are against Bush or sensitive, both of which are very general and assumptive.

I saw a clip. Anyone "offended" by this is a jack ass. Period. And, if there is anyone here who "sees the world through goggles", it is you, digitalLeftyboy.

Oh give me a break. I cannot believe that any of you are shocked by this. Get over it. So, because Bush smiled that night, he is a hateful murderer?

Get a grip. And all of you are irritated that Bush is angered by the fact that it was broadcast... Can you blame him when there are people like you who view this as offensive?

Dude. . . it's called an opinion. I can stand leftist crap either. Anyway, since the medias of the world tend to be very anti-bush at this point, if this we're actually reputable at all, I think we'd have heard a bit more about it.

Fellowship isn't blind at all, he just didn't feel like wasting the keystrokes on something as trivial as this. Furthermore, he's not what I'd consider to be a knee-jerk Republican.

I've seen the clip live in the Netherlands, it was very embarrassing to see mister Bush laugh, making jokes, rolling his eyes, and sit there being funny while a minute later he changed the world

this has nothing to do with leftish crap and all, fact is sateliet broadcasting for Europe was already open, networks waiting for his speech were just waiting for Bush to speak

    amateurs.

Tell me how the media throwing its support behind Bush's most important pet project equates to anti-bushism. I don't think that's the case at all. In fact, I think the media loves Bush. Don't you agree?

As far as the clip is concerned, I think it's an incredibly stupid thing to do only minutes before Bush embarked on war. Even if it's not indicative of his state of mind, that it's just a way of relieving stress, you generally don't want to give the appearance of being carefree during the time right before an important address to the nation. Reasonably speaking, it just wasn't the smartest thing he could have done.

    Well, a couple of points.

    1. I agree..the media has grown more fond of Bush. The more lefty sources don't. Fox loves him. I think Brokaw has turned the corner on him a bit. I saw at least 6 anti-war/anti-bush articles on the front page of MSNBC the other day. I was kind of taken aback by it.

    2. Here is my problem with your second point: The video wasn't Bush's fault...it was the BBC that ****ed it up. The White House has now personally assumed responsibility for "throwing the switch to go live".

They have said that this is not the first time this has happened. I think it may have been intentional.

    3. Finally, it is almost impossible to tell Bush's state of mind by looking at him. I saw it. It could be nerves. It could be stress-relief. Who knows. No one really knows what he was thinking.

blame either the White House Communications staff (whose job is to manage the image of the PoTUS and avoid goofs like this), the director in the uplink truck who didn't mute the feed and just leave the Seal on screen until the camera light cue'd "live" (whose job is to specify which cameras are on "Audition" and which are on "Program" in the mixer), or GWB himself, who could have had his hair done in another room and made an entrance as if just emerging from the Situation Room

blaming other media sources for revealing the emperor's lack of clothes?

talk to the advisors, talk to the wardrobe yes-men, talk to the wearer...

TV's West Wing had a scene at the end of the third season (election campaign) where Prez Bartlet threw out some comments to a "live" camera as if he didn't obviously know that it might be live. The staff and media went bonkers over how a supposedly savvy spin department didn't manage to clue the guy in to the meaning of green light and red light on cameras.

anybody with 2 seconds of media training knows you always comport yourself as if the camera is on. failure to do so gets you the nose-picking front-page picture you deserve.

    amateurs, i say.

    1. Cool. An issue is finally resolved and agreed upon in AppleOutsider!

    2. See curiousburb's comments.

    3. True. But the appearance of impropriety is really the issue. You wouldn't laugh at a funeral where laughing would be frowned upon. Would you? You wouldn't shoot hoops with crumpled paper into a wastebasket in the waiting room just before a serious job interview. Would you? Whatever the outcome of this, it is only reasonable to suggest that it wasn't a very smart thing to do at the time. It disturbed me.

Don't be so hard on him, he probably has some issues to work through.

I saw it too -- how about YOU (critics) address the entire f*cking world? we'll videotape you getting ready, including the ten minutes of projectile vomiting you do at some point. Better yet, we'll tell YOU that we're videotaping it, but we'll let it go out live.

Those of you who still find it necessary to criticize the president because you cannot or will not understand the real issues at hand: Grow up. People on the other side of the world are risking their lives so that you have the right to mock the president, and some of those folks would probably punch your lights out if you said it to their faces today. Shut up and find another hobby.

You know if a liberal president did anything like this, it would be all over the news:

PRESIDENT SEEN LAUGHING AND CAREFREE BEFORE WAR ANNOUNCEMENT

News would trickle down from the basest of conservative programs: From Rush and Savage to Fox News. Then CNN and MSNBC. The appearance of impropriety wouldn't just be an appearance. It would be said and repeated that President actually didn't care.

I just think it's another sign of Bush's insincerity. I can't believe anything he says because he never comes across as believeable.

    Those pregnant pauses.

    Those pursed lips.

    All contrived.

What is wrong with laughing before announcing war?

Maybe if he was laughing *about* the war that would be a problem.

The media by far and large is very liberal... me working in media I can tell you firsthand. The only grasp the lierbals can't take in media is talk radio, but they own everything else. heh. Its funny tho, that the industries that run the world are very right wing... energy, utility companies, car manufacturers, and technology, most of their financial backers are republican and are very conservative. Makes you wonder why the media world is so cut-throat and backstabbing.... sometimes I wonder what side I really am on.

Secondly, as an editor, you can make anyone look like a fool on tv, either freeze frame while their blinking... run the footage backwards.... also the president coming from texas, we texas smile a lot more than other parts of the world... really.
