Future updates to iOS will be offered as two options, letting users choose to gain all the new features in iOS 15 or solely security updates on iOS 14.

Apple has announced that it is revamping how iOS software updates are issued. Instead of a single download that a user can elect to install or not, forthcoming updates will be released with a choice of two options.

"iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app," said Apple in a preview of iOS 15. "You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it's released for the latest features and most complete set of security updates."

"Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you're ready to upgrade to the next major version," it continues.

The presumed aim is to make sure all users get key security updates as soon as they are available. And also to avoid issues where unforeseen bugs are found in the iOS update after release, as has recently happened with the beta release of iOS 14.7.

I think corporate America is pushing this one, how many times have we seen full updates hose some feature on other apps, I know a number times Mail would not connect to outlook server after a recent update.

About dang time!! This is fantastic to me.  Now I can update my iOS devices just like I update the rest of my kit from other vendors.

Well I guess it will help when you also have older devices that need to keep compatible with each other.

Would have been nice if they wouldn't have forced my wife's MacBook Air from Mojave to Big Sur. It used to run for hours, now runs for about 5-10 minutes before shutting down.

And, just the other night.... I look at my phone and it's telling me it's is GOING to update later that day. Apple's getting almost as bad as Microsoft with updates these days.

WRT your phone, turn automatic updates off.  You'll then have the choice of when, and if, to upgrade.

What the heck... I thought I had all that stuff turned off. It was on. Now I have to check all our devices. Sneaky Apple.
