So we have 970 in : PowerMac, PowerBook and iMac and G4 in iBook, iMac and iCheap. This is possible. But I believe we see the 970 only later (2004) in the iMac.
The iMac 970 will probably not be introduced before MWSF in January. In the meantime they can use the former "high end" chips to make the iMac G4 a little more competitive before people starts buying xmas presants.
My big question is how any of the new PB 's with or without 970 will compete with this "centrino" chip advertised with up to 8 hour battery life and built in wifi. how does 970 chip help, or will the centrino go unanswered for 8 months?????
hey my post time is off it's 8:30pm est are they using bagdad time, i posted in the future how cool...time shift
What in hell does "built-in Wi-Fi" mean? That the antenna/chip is integrated ino the MoBo? Sounds insignificant to ME! With the size of the Extreme card, it is not important. Battery life? Apple will find a way of scaling back te 970 for word processing stuff. Think: scale back the processor to 1/3 of its speed,(that's still about the speed of the hi-end iBook!), and, tadaa!, the battery life is 12 hours for Word, etc.

Yep, Centrino offers nothing we've not had for 2 years or more, but Intel has better marketing.
I think you're wrong about low power word processing mode. A great thing about Apple laptops is if it says 1GHZ it means it. P4M based laptops do speed reduction, so if the 970 can do true 1.4GHZ for 3 hours or more it will be another win for Apple.
Folks, one simple question: When do we / when do you expect the next 15" PB G4/SuperDrive? (The current machine doesnt have keyboard backlight, right?)

We don't. We expect the 15.4" PowerBook G5/970 to be released sometime this year though
Only the 17" PB has keyboard backlight in the current lineup.

I hope by 'we' you mean the those of you living in a fantasy, and not those of us who wish to live in reality. I'll chew a hole through my mouse cord if I see a Powerbook with a 970 on the shelves this year.

Wow, what is Apple doing?. They release the NEW 12" and the 17" but not the 15"?. Seriously weird!.
I too would be completely surprised to see a 970 PowerBook this year, but here's an intersting point.
The 970 chip as far as I know @ 1.2GHz dissipates just 19W compared to a current PB 17" 1G G4 @ 30W.
So Im thinking, why would Apple put in a 1.2G-1.4G G4's in PB's if the 970 would be <30W @ up to 1.4GHz.
You get a 64bit OS 10.3 laptop - now that would be a huge market leading coup for Apple.
Also, would Apple release new 970 PB's as well as PowerMacs?, I doubt it. Its just that even the new Als would be due for a speed bump no later than September, allowing for the horrendous shipping delays.
If Apple comes out with a 15-inch PowerBook 970, I'm all over it...My credit card will be out faster than you can say, "Boo!" Otherwise, I'll just have suffer through my TiBook 867 until it does come out!

While I think the Powerbook will get a 970 this year, I don't think it will be in the 15" only. Releasing just a 15" 970 would kill sales on the 12" & 17".
No, if it happens it will be across the board as any other choice leaves you with unsold PB G4s. There's a slim chance they will keep the 12" G4 as the 970 is a bigger chip.
If iBooks go G4 in May-ish, expect Powerbooks to go 970 in November-ish.
Nah, if we're getting a 970 in laptops, it will come soon. Not in November. If we see a revised PowerBook 15-inch before WWDC, it will be a G4. If nothing comes before WWDC, the PowerBook will get the 970 at WWDC or soon there after.

(unless 10.2.6 adds 970 support, but that would spill the beans a bit)
I think a 10.2.6 having the minimum support to boot on a 970 mac is very, very likely. You wouldn't be able to have 64 bit apps until 10.3 of course.
Just a gut feel, but here's hoping.
Agreed.
Lots of things point to Pather/WWDC being 970 related, not least of which is Apple plastering it over the homepage. Then there is all the G4 related updates in January, like they were getting them out of the way. Then the year of the portable thing.
I'm thinking G4 iBook (possibly based on 12" Powerbook) then 970 based Powerbooks.
Then there is all the G4 related updates in January, like they were getting them out of the way.
Is it possible that Apple originally never intended to introduce the 17" PB in January but planned to introduce it later at some sort of special event. Then they discovered that they probably would be getting to close to the introduction of the 15" 970 PowerBook and chose to introduce the 17" at MWSF to minimize eventual criticism. That could also explain the extreme delays we have seen for this model.
So you have many years worth of bad publicity surrounding the Power Mac, and you're trying to figure out a way off maximising the impact of the launch of the 970.
Making sure everybody notices.
Making sure that Apple is associated with power beyond equal.
And it dawns on you... you don't launch your new processor in a line that has so much bad publicity... you stick it in your Pro user laptop. You have a laptop that can beat, hands down, anything wintel can produce - on the lap or on the desk. You have a processor that nobody can touch, and you have it in a laptop (where the competition is struggling to say the least).
It's the fastest machine on the face of the planet, and it's a laptop. You would gain far more publicity doing this than announcing a new desktop line-up. Pro users would be delighted - even if they were desktop users because they would know that they would get the fix shortly.
So you follow up quickly with the Power Mac and other lines. People would automatically assume that the Power Mac was even more powerful than this wonder laptop that everybody is raving about - simply because it's a desktop.
And you would proclaim "2003 is the year of the laptop".

no way
never ever gonna happen.
it's a total different market, the ibook will become more expensive, less sturdy, not really suited for its task and that's the last thing apple need.
they upgrade the ibook to a G4 give it a 13.1", 14.1" or a 13" cinemadisplay like screen and tweak the 12"Al pb with a nice ppc 970.
everybody happy.

A 970 PowerBook may not be too far out there!
