COVID delays Apple moving production away from China

Apple, Google, and others are having to delay or reduce plans to move manufacturing away from China, as the impact of the coronavirus makes governments increase border controls.

Plans to move away from over-reliance on China have been affected by COVID

Partly because of US/China trade tensions, and partly to avoid over-reliance on one source, Apple and other firms have been steadily moving away from China. Now, however, new COVID outbreaks have affected international trade as governments attempt to contain new variants of the virus.

According to Nikkei Asia, tighter border controls and intermittent travel restrictions are affecting the plans of Apple, Google, Amazon, and component suppliers.

Reportedly, Apple's plans to mass produce AirPods and AirPods Pro in Vietnam have been been particularly affected. For now, they will continue to be produced in China, though unnamed sources say Apple still aims to move 20% of AirPods production to Vietnam at some point.

"[Vietnam's] engineering workforce is still far from adequate," a supply chain executive familiar with Apple and Google's plans, told Nikkei Asia. "With all the travel restrictions, it's only feasible to make products in Vietnam that are already in mass production elsewhere, rather than starting production of upcoming products from scratch in the country."

"[Border control] has been tightened in the past few months," a separate Amazon supplier manager said. "We could not easily dispatch our Chinese engineers to support our production projects for Amazon in northern Vietnam, so the company has been bringing in fully vaccinated Taiwanese engineers from China."

Reportedly, the Vietnamese government has also ordered factories to halt production, unless they can accommodate workers with sleeping facilities, or travel arrangements. Nikkei Asia says that Apple suppliers including Foxconn and Luxshare briefly suspended production over COVID measures.

The publication's same sources say that Apple has also put on hold its intention to bring some proportion of MacBook Pro and iPad production to Vietnam.

Imagine that in 1945 GM produced most of its cars in Ukraine. That’s kind of the situation apple is in — deeply dependent on a county that is run by communist autocrats and is increasingly hostile to the US.

    good luck with that apple!

Actually, it's the opposite.   We've been attacking them for several years.   But when they respond to the attacks we like to blame them for responding to our attacks.   It's a form of gaslighting.

The same game is playing out here in this country between Republicans and Democrats, white and black, etc....

Most of Vietnam has been in a 2 to 3 week lockdown since late July. It's going to be start-stop like this until enough of the population has been vaccinated, which will take a while. So no surprise that this or that activity scheduled to be done in the country has been postponed.

Lol. The opposite?? What are you smoking and/or how much is china paying you? Seems very odd for someone to take the side of a tyrannical government that controls its people through a dystopian social credit system, harvests organs of dissidents, breaks international commerce laws, holds the vast majority of Africa's ports in debt-servitude, aggressively overfishes the oceans, aggressively tests military forces near taiwan (including conducting invasion exercises), breaks international agreements by building islands to claim parts of the ocean (that they then built military bases on), blocked travel from wuhan within china after discovering the corona virus while simultaneously allowing travel from wuhan to other countries.. on and on..

Are you not embarrassed to support such a crap government as the chinese CCP?

He's been doing that for years here. I don't think too many people take him seriously. The only reason I read his posts is because they actually make me laugh. But thanks for refuting him.

The opposite? So… Apple isn’t at all dependent on China and China is the political and economic equivalent of, say, Sweden?

But setting that silly statement aside….

From 1972 through 2016, the US establishment was pretty consistently, almost relentlessly, pro-China. There was a belief that political liberalism would follow economic liberalism. That clearly hasn’t happened.

Donald Trump was a horrible president. But just as a broken clock is right twice each day, DT is also occasionally not entirely wrong. China is one case where the establishment view became misaligned with reality and the Trump disruption created a space for reassessment. The fact that Biden — very much a member of the establishment — also perceives China as problematic should be clarifying.

Back to supporting your authoritarian pals of the PRC, again, but it looks like you have plethora of resistance tonight, so I'll catch you later.

Maybe you can call them "anti-communists" like you called me in the past, as if that is a bad thing.

LOL...  It's not what I said or implied at all!   But, nice try!

    Trump?
He not only tried to incite insurrection in Taiwan but here in the U.S. as well.  As in pretty much everything, he was wrong.

    Not at all....
Just pointing out that lies, bullshit and propaganda seldom get you where you want to be.

That "freedom and democracy" excuse for attacking other nations is looking a little tattered lately.
