    George Orwell would be proud.

This is somebody snooping on you and controlling you, no matter which way it goes.

Sure, the premise is something we all want: protect children from evil - even that which they could bring in themselves.

But it really is an open door to massive abuse, spying, censorship, and control.
Slippery Slope fallacy.  This was already happening and has happened in the past: look up what Lower Merion School District and Aaron's were doing some time,  That is what we know about - how much of that malware is actually government written to allow access to your computer and see what's there?

Apple do not place a hash database and hidden processing engine on your devices- you just destroyed privacy for surveillance. The future ability to manipulate that engine (even though you say you will say no) offers a baked in back door and avenue for governments.
Yes, we agree that those images are appalling - so just delete them when scanned on your server and do it repeatedly! Do not play legislator, judge and jury- that is not your role. Stop developing your surveillance engine and just delete disturbing images from your servers. Also talking down to users with dumb down speak and telling us we mis understood - does not help your loyal followers - this is a PR fail and damaging Apple.

Is it a back door, or an open door?  Or maybe a side door, or a French window?

Get your metaphors straight guys, none of them are making any sense.

I think the better solution is not to allow the device to store or transmit these kind of image or even take those kinds of photos. Like the color photocopy industry did when the government found out how easy it was to photocopy money and have it look real. Today if you try to photocopy currency you will just get a black image or it just will not produce a copy.

It is not Apple is not in the business of report laws being broken or spying on people to figure if they broken some law. If they care about kids then prevent the device from contributing to the crime.
How can Apple do that if no one wants them to “scan images”?
Actually, I think most people objection to the fact Apple is reporting people's activities and the ability to expand the capability to track and report other activities. My solution just presents you from using the device to commit a crime. Photocopiers do not report your attempt to copy money, it just prevents you from getting yourself in trouble.

In the madman era we live in now where evil is called good, good is called evil, and common sense doesn’t matter if it’s unpopular, this is really scary stuff.

This can and WILL be used against unpopular opinion whether right or wrong, political dissent, religious conviction and liberty, etc. and it will be a tool to silence those not deemed politically “correct” regardless of the freedom of speech/expression afforded us in the USA and regardless of the merit of any disagreement.

We’ve already seen what the media does with it’s reality distortion field, what social media companies (and even Apple podcasts) do with opinions they disagree with. They simply cancel them.

Enough is enough. Come one Apple. You made the wrong choice here.

Simply bake an image/text viewing option into parental controls with a notification on the child’s phone that the image they are about to send/receive is monitored (and make it a term for other communications apps to have this app activated in a mandatory manner) and be done with it.

Right on point, people do not realize the governments and other "well meaning people" like using the "its about the kids" to convince people to give up their rights and privacy. We see it all the time, no one wants kids hurt and the well meaning people tell you to trust them and do not want you to think about what they are asking beyond it is for the kids.

It’s practically impossible to manually detect when an imagine is contextually child-porn.

A big part of what makes these images illegal is context/situation. You can’t really accurately differentiate between what is completely inappropriate and unacceptable, and a photo of your kid running in the yard naked.
The false positives would be terrible.

Yes, I made this point a number of time about the whole scanning of images, some pictures of kids in their birthday suits is acceptable and perfecticly legal, it is impossible for AI systems to make this determination. AI systems are very far from making very nuanse decisions. Most of these systems are just doing a comparison between known condition like this is cat and this is not a cat. This is why when the tech big brother tried to sensor information about COVID people started using the word Rona and the system miss them.  What will happen is lots of false reporting, taking valuable resource filtering out the valid from the invalid. Back in the day of actually photo development, photo labs had a person review images which fell into this catagory, this is why Facebook hires third parties companies in India to look at images for inappropriate images and they do not even get it right.

I can’t believe how badly Apple has bungled this. They used to be masters of controlling the message, but this has been pure amateur hour. They should have foreseen the worries, the criticism, the accusations. Heck people here saw the possible ramifications within minutes of the first article being posted. But no they dropped it, and let the narrative get away from them. Now I won’t comment on if these organizations worries are correct, but Apple has put themselves in a no win situation. If they go ahead with it they will be the company that works with dictators to spy on dissent and activists. If they kill the project they will be the company that supports predators.

Apple has screwed themselves utterly on this one.
I agree, this show you who is now in charge at the company or at least think they are in charge. These are people who think they are doing altruistic work and fail to see the broad view and do not care what other people think. You also have people internally trying to bring the company down by saying the company's management is racist and promote racist ideas and they also advocating that no one is worth more and everyone should be paid the same.

Apple better get this under control, or these people will destroy the company and the trust people have in the company.

Perhaps the problem with Apple's apparent inability to see the issue here is due to a lack of diversity.  Not the irrelevant view of diversity where we categorize people based upon skin color, gender, religion and the like.  But true diversity...  diversity of thought.  Denise Young Smith was right on target with her comments on diversity, so Apple ousted her.  Could this be an example of what happens when you fail to have diversity of thought and perspective?  When senior management is working in lock step rather than asking questions?  Having seen Cook's response to share holder questions on his leadership, would an employee dare to rock the boat?

    Perhaps?
Again right on, diversity of though is the most important things, and you get this by having people from diverse backgrounds. Apple is working on finding people of diverse backgrounds but they maybe focusing on people ideas being the same verse bring different ideas. In Steve's book it talk about how Steve looked for people who challenge the status quo, who looked at thing from a completely different view point. I wondering if this is really happening at Apple anymore. I hear all the time in the recruitment world that companies HR and hiring Managers looking into people social media accounts to see where they stand on various issue and if it does align with their ideas they do not hire them.

The problem today we have everyone tell everyone else how they should think on lots of various topics to the point if you ask a question or challenge the view point they want to cancel you from existence or make sure you never talk about your views. We have lots of people with bad ideas who do not want anyone knowing their ideas are bad.
