Apple has been testing in-screen Touch ID, but it won't be in 'iPhone 13'

Aside from the off-topic covid rants, is anyone else really impressed by this technology? I think it’s cool that they can get enough resolution to get an accurate fingerprint through the screen without compromising image quality.

A combination of touchID and FaceID would be nice - gloves are a fact of life for a significant part of the year in MN, the combination would likely have increased security and give more options for more people.

Yes indeed,  good points.   The reality is that not everyone wants an Apple Watch to deal with authentication issues or even have an Apple Watch at all.  If you want to wear an Apple Watch that’s great, but don’t assume others do.  Many prefer to wear a real watch or no watch at all.

Wow. How did the subject of Covid become part of this article???????
Because Touch ID does not care if somebody has a mask on or not
    And the point is?
What an odd reply. The point is pretty darn clear IMO.

I for one would appreciate TouchID immensely. I really prefer not to buy another smartphone that verifies only with FaceID as it's not worth the hassle in certain scenarios.

Impressed by this technology, i.e. under screen FPS? - It has been there in upper mid-range and above Android phones AND working reliably for 3 years already (except for Samsung phones who got it working properly only this year). Apple is simply 3-years late to the party IF they include it in this year's iPhone lineup. Next year - it will be 4 years late to the party. Impressive - Yes, back in 2018 when Chinese OEMs made it work reliably. Not so much in late 2021 or 2022.

it’s going to end, I know it’s difficult for some to accept. But please understand, you will not have this to cling to forever. You’re going to have to find purpose in something else. You’ve been given notice.
So funny, this is the article currently open in my other browser tab: The Coronavirus Is Here Forever. This Is How We Live With It.

if this article doesn't convince you, here's a fun little fact it overlooks: COVID has spread to "animal reservoirs." 30% of Canadian white-tailed deer have it. Lots of ferrets, and a handful of incidents of dogs. You can't do a mass immunization program of wild animals. COVID is as much a fact of life as the flu now.

If you're referring to the pandemic and mask situation… well that will go away sort of… hopefully the west will develop habits like in Japan where it's just considered good manners to walk around with a mask when you have a common cold like in pre-COVID days… but anyway, that's where we are now.

The current camera face ID system works really well when you are not wearing a mask. The one main problem I have with it is that when you are trying to use your iPhone as a flashlight the face ID keeps spotting my face turning on the screen and blinding me in the dark.

So lame. Covid isn’t going away anytime soon.

Get an Apple Watch for it. Case closed.
If Apple made a watch that had decent battery life I would.
They do. Mine lasts 1-2 days, tho I see no reason not to charge daily just like we do our phones. I get all day and night (sleep) tracking, workout tracking, etc.

It's better except when you have to use FaceID for Apply Pay, and then it's broken again. This is where TouchID is superior to FaceID when face masks are involved.
True, but I use a numeric passcode and it takes little time to tap it in when using Apple Pay out in the store during mask time. Or just the Watch, which is faster still.

I didn’t say I was impressed that Apple is doing something no one else in the world has ever done and is 50 years ahead of their time because every other manufacturer has incompetent idiots in their R&D department. I just said I’m impressed by the technology.

    But thanks for making assumptions.

If Apple Watch did actual sleep analysis I'd be inclined to, but last I heard it doesn't.  so I stick with my Fiitbit watch for that. So no, not case closed.

Apologies for my choice of words, making it look different than what I meant. My comment about Apple being late the party was not aimed at you, more for Apple hardcore fans (someone like @Beats) in this forum. I know that you do not belong to the group who think something like "Apple can do nothing wrong, everything original in this world is invented by Apple and all other companies make only copycat/knockoff of Apple's products". You have been fairly balanced in your comments and I didn't intend to be mean towards you. Apologies again for the tone of my comment.

Regarding this under-screen FPS technology being impressive - I stand by my comments. Every new technology is impressive when it is relatively new and niche. Once it becomes mainstream, it loses the wow factor over a period of time. It was impressive back when it was introduced about 3.5 years ago in half-baked form and improved upon in a short period of time (within 6-8 months) and made to work reliably. In the fast-moving mobile technology world, it has already become just one of the run-of-the-mill features available in smartphones (without any wow factor attached to it) in 2021.

    Options are always good.

Multiple biometric options and even across multiple devices would be even better.

Let's not forget that FaceID is not advised for some people right out of the gate. It has never been able to learn my wife's face with glasses for example and obviously masks and other situations also make it an issue.

An underscreen scanner would be great, or a power button scanner or my personal favourite, a rear mounted scanner.

Having authentification 'distributed' across different devices is already on the horizon but for Apple, two options on the same device would be my preference.
