Jennifer Garner replaces Julia Roberts in Apple TV+ original 'The Last Thing He Told Me'

Apple TV+ original series "The Last Thing He Told Me" has a new lead in Jennifer Garner after Julia Roberts pulled out of the role due to a scheduling issue.

Garner will star and executive produce the limited series produced by Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine, which optioned Laura Dave's New York Times bestselling book, Deadline reported Friday.

The adaptation tells the tale of a woman (Garner) who forms an unexpected relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter while unraveling the mystery surrounding her husband's disappearance. Roberts was originally slated to star in the lead role.

"The Last Thing He Told Me" was created by Dave alongside her husband Josh Singer, who won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for "Spotlight." Lauren Neustadter will executive produce with Witherspoon for Hello Sunshine.

Garner is also starring in and executive producing an Apple TV+ adaptation of Amy Silverstein's memoir "My Glory Was I Had Such Friends." Bad Robot's J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson are attached to the project as executive producers.

Apple TV+ is slowly building out an impressive library of content with series, films and specials spanning a range of genres. The tech giant reportedly plans to double its production slate to release one new show or movie a week in 2022.

A little off topic but Foundation is one of my favorite shows. I don’t understand why some people are saying that it is unfilmable. I totally understand why a movie would be unfilmable because there is just not enough time to cover everything, but a series gives plenty of time to lay everything out. There are actually a large number of tv+ shows I enjoy watching and more are coming out all the time.

They say it’s unfilmable because of its vast scope. The TV series is only based on the books, and has been changed quite a bit to make it more palatable for the screen. 

That said, I’ve found it to be quite good.

Read the books and you’ll see why. Jumps across decades at a time, lots of characters, little character development, lots of exposition, little action, and economic warfare. Doesn’t exactly lend itself to the visual medium. Asimov tried to address some of these things but it’s still challenging.

Agree, it has been changed a lot. Goyer had made an interesting story.  It won’t last 8 seasons though.  And the departures from the novels aren’t so egregious it should have been called something else (looking at you Will Smith and I, Robot. I will never forgive that travesty).

Yea, that’s what they were saying when they said it was unfilmable. For a movie you might have 3 hours to tell the story, but in a TV series you can have dozens of hours if need be. That’s why I don’t understand why they would think it’s unfilmable even for a TV series. I think the TV series has plenty of action. I did hear that a lot was changed. I never read the books but I’m sure they didn’t have much racial or gender diversity. I did read for example that there were very few women in the books and in the TV series the roles changed from male to female. Like the role of Salvor Hardin for example. I guess that I would argue that it is filmable because I believe the show was well done. I have no criticisms of the show so far. I think Asimov would be delighted and amazed by the show.
