Apple is hurting Taiwan based Foxconn tremendously here.
Next, China will start a chip foundry and pressure Apple into shifting their processors there. Short of military terrorism and attempted takeover against Taiwan, China will use strong arm market tactics. Actually, thanks to Apples compliance, they already are.
TSMC should consider leaning more into the Intel partnership and others. That will hedge against catastrophe should Apple pull another fast one.
China already has chip factories. But they're growing them at record rates to defend themselves against foolish, counter-productive American sanctions.
As for Taiwan, they don't have to take it. It's already theirs. it's been theirs. But yeh, they'll do what they need to do to keep it from splitting off -- just as the U.S. did when some of our territories tried the same.
FFS George, that's bullshit
China has a tiny percentage of chip production under 10 nm, and that isn't going to change anytime soon. Even the EU is starting to understand that Taiwan needs to be defended as it has the bulk of under 10nm production, and all of the leading edge production excepting Samsung.
No one in the West wants to see China use leading edge chip production for weapons production.
But I’m sure this will turn political nonetheless.
"Turn" political? This is part of a Chinese push to weaken the Taiwanese economy in any way they can. Despite their military buildup, their ruling clique would love it if Taiwan fell under their control without a fight.

Western nations especially the five eyes misunderstand Chinese history. Taiwan is a part of China. That is the claim by China. According to this premise if China reunite Taiwan then Taiwan is a part of China. Why would China persecute TSMC?
The western mentality is to deny Taiwan as a part of China. China think western nations are splitting Taiwan from China. According to the western theory, since Taiwan is not a part of China. China wants to hurt Taiwan and TSMC. Do you see the contradictions of these two thoughts?
The sad truth is Taiwan is now ruled by separatists party DPP. DPP try to coerce western nations into thinking Taiwan is an independent nation. The same as Uyguirs separatists are doing.

Not like TSMC. Though that will change thanks to American money.
Sanctions are not foolish or counterproductive. They are a way of saying “get back in line.” And they work.
Taiwan is not under POC rule, no matter what China tries to tell everyone. But hey, props for trying to support their false claim I guess.
Back in the real world, Taiwan has its own, elected government. The confusion comes from the fact that both sides were “China” and the use of the term still exists in both government names. Both think they deserve the right to fold the other under their leadership. Neither does. One one side, you have china, which has an abusive communist government. On the other. Taiwan, which has an elected democracy.
Apple helping China get richer just is not a good look no matter how much some want to justify it.

Nobody has to defend Taiwan. We just have to stop threatening to try to take it from China -- then things return to normal and everybody wins.
And yeh, we're provoking them into developing their own high end chips with our foolish little sanctions. It'll take a couple years for them to develop their own (they're already well on the way), then we'll be the losers. The world won't need our technology -- like everything else, China will do it better, faster and cheaper.
But I’m sure this will turn political nonetheless.

China has been clear: they don't want to "weaken" Taiwan. They just want it to return to the One-China policy Taiwan and the world agreed to 40 some years ago when Taiwan gave up the the delusion of actually being the official government for all of China.

The ridiculousness of that American sponsored delusion (that Taiwan is an independent country) is that prior to the current One-China policy recognized the world over (even by the U.S. -- except for the crazies) Taiwan claimed that China was part of Taiwan!

Before 1971, ROC is one of the founding nations of UN and occupied the Permanent Security Council seat with the help from US. When ROC was replaced by PRC for representing China, Taiwan left UN. For fifty years after that, Taiwan tries to maneuver itself out of this quagmire. US under Trump tried to change the fact by claiming CCP has never ruled Taiwan. But whether CCP has never ruled Taiwan an Taiwan is a part of China are two different things and they are not mutually exclusive. Only people lacking good logic will mix up.

Not a political statement but just stating a fact
The issue is that our citizens haven’t made the $3.15 an hour they make to build iPhones in China in over 25 years as it went up up $4.75 in 1996 and then $5.15 in 1997. The last move was to $7.25 in 2009. Think about that. People working jobs that pay minimum wage with poor conditions and no benefits saw their worth increase by $4.10 over 25 years. That’s about a 16 cent raise per year. Trust me inflation was a lot more that 16 cents.
You’re clueless. Minimum wage in 1989 was $3.35, and you’d be lucky to find any fast food restaurant that would pay more. That $3.35 is equivalent to $7.69 in today’s dollars. The average minimum wage is now $12 per hour, and the average pay at a McDonalds is $15.
The average HOURLY WAGE for ALL WORKERS, not minimum wage workers, in the United States is $11.19.
Correct, because the minimum federal tipped wage cash hourly rate* is just $2.13. And how many people actually tip these days?
Complete fools. The CCP lie, cheat, steal and do whatever it takes to dominate. I thought diversification of your supply chain was the sensible approach but no, Apple puts all its eggs in one basket and then will act in bewilderment when this falls over.
You could see this coming though given their stance in their support for divisive radical groups. Pity as the products are good.

I used to think that you were a U.S. Citizen; now I question that due to your obvious support of authoritarianism.
LOL... So your hatred of China is driving you to think that anybody who supports truth belongs to the CCP?
And again, that truth is: Taiwan claimed that China belonged to Taiwan until the world ended that delusion and collectively and officially recognized the One China policy -- where Taiwan was an autonomous region of China.
And, China is apparently happy to keep it that way -- unless the China haters continue to promote insurrection there. Then they will squash it and make it fully part of China.
Those are your two choices:
-- Taiwan will remain an autonomous region of China.
-- Taiwan will be folded in as an integral part of China.
We saw what happened in HongKong when western countries promoted insurrection. The same will happen in Taiwan if those same western countries continue to promote insurrection there.
But, like any school yard bully, you and the other China Haters will continue trying to push others around -- till they push you back. Then you'll whine and complain and try to blame it on your victim.
Maybe Cook can help India expand its local technology industry?

Correct, because the minimum federal tipped wage cash hourly rate* is just $2.13. And how many people actually tip these days?
You are not interpreting the "minimum wage" for tipped workers correctly. What the FLSA is saying is that employers can not pay their tipped employees less than $2.13 an hour, even if they make more than $7.25 an hour in tip. If a tipped worker only makes an average of $2 an hour in tip, then the employer must pay that employee $5.25 an hour in wages, in order to meet the $7.25 minimum wage law. If a tipped employee makes an average of $10 an hour in tip, the employer must still pay that employee $2.13 an hour. The employer can only claim a maximum of $5.12 an hour ($7.25 - $2.13) in tip credit, to offset the FLSA $7.25 minimum wage. (Or what ever the minimum wage is for the State or county.)
What this $2.13 "minimum wage" law does is to make it so that employers of tipped employees that makes over $7.25 in tip an hour, can not use all $7.25 in tip to offset the FLSA minimum wage of $7.25 an hour and end up paying them nothing in wages.
Plus many States, like CA, do not allow employers of tipped employees to deduct tip from the State minimum wage. And if the minimum wage set by the State is higher than that of the Feds, the State minimum wage prevails.
But there are a few States where the Federal $7.25 minimum wage is not used for tipped employees because of age or the number of tipped employees do not meet the minimum set by the State. But probably not enough to make a big difference when calculating all employees hourly earnings in US.
Therefore, if one were to calculate the hourly earnings of tipped employees, it can not or should not, ever be below $7.25. That $7.25 an hour can be a combination of what the employer pays an hour and tip earned an hour. But under FLSA, the employer must pay the minimum of $2.13 of it, no matter if the tip employee earns above the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, in tip. That's what this FLSA $2.13 "minimum wage"for tipped employees means. That the employer must pay a minimum of $2.13 in wages to their tipped employees. Not that tip employees can earn less than the $7.25 an hour set by FLSA.
But I imagine that there are some bean counters that will use the $2.13 minimum wage for tipped employees in their calculations, even though the tipped employees might be earning over $15 an hour in tip and wages. What a tipped employer earn in an hour and what the employer pay their tipped employees an hour in wages, are two different numbers that might be far apart from each other.

If an employee’s tipped minimum wage and tips are not enough to reach the minimum wage, you must make up the difference.<
