'Wordle' clone tops App Store games chart, but it isn't what you think [u]

What appears to be a "Wordle" clone has become the top downloaded free game in the App Store, though the app actually predates the viral version of the game.

The still-popular daily word game, "Wordle," continues to draw in audiences and scammers alike despite a recent purchase by the New York Times. It is a simple web-based game with a daily guess mechanic that can easily be cloned by profit-seeking scammers.

The latest clone to reach the top of the free games chart is sourced by a developer named Steven Cravotta. While it adds a few challenge modes with timers, it takes inspiration from the web game. However, the story goes a bit deeper than that.

An AppleInsider reader has pointed out that the game "Wordle!" existed before the web game gained popularity. The App Store listing shows it has existed for more than five years. However, the previous version of the game didn't feature a game mode similar to the browser-based Wordle.

The developer noticed his game had gained a lot of downloads after the web game gained popularity, so he reached out to Josh Wardle, creator of the "Wordle" web game. Cravotta and Wardle decided to donate profits from the "Wordle!" game to Boost! West Oakland.

The game has since added a version of "Wordle" as a separate game mode. It is unknown if this version of the game will be allowed to exist after the New York Times acquisition.

The app is named "Wordle!" with an exclamation mark, and the description touts it as "just like the viral word game, but on your phone!" It has several in-app purchases to unlock words, buy in-app coins, and get level skip tokens. There is also a $2.99 "Remove Ads" IAP.

"Wordle!" isn't the only app similar to the browser-based sensation climbing the App Store charts. Below it are other clones like "Wordus" at number 7 and "Word Guess - Word Games" at number 11 in the top free games chart. Those three games are the top three games respectively in the top word games charts as well.

On the other hand, "Wordle!" is likely the only app whose developer actually communicated with the maker of the browser-based version. It isn't clear if the game mode mimicking Wardle's word game was added with his blessing.

The App Store has a human-led app review program meant to prevent copying popular properties or games to seek an easy profit. App review doesn't catch everything, but seemingly apparent cases like "Wordle!" increasingly bring Apple's processes under fire.

Update 12:19 p.m. Eastern: Added information about the "Wordle!" donation and Steven Cravotta's communication with Wardle.

Come on, Apple. If you can’t pick low hanging fruit, what chance do your App Store customers have against more clever crooks?

Wordle! actually predates the viral version of Wordle. The AppStore shows it was uploaded 5 years ago. It survived the last wordle purge because it’s in no way a clone.

The dev of Wordle! was surprised the app became popular after people were looking for Wordle because it was essentially a dead app and even contacted Josh Wardle to coordinate a donation to charity with the unexpected windfall from ad revenue. Several outlets have already covered this.

The cloning problem is bad but so is not doing your research before calling out a developer and their work.

If Apple started offering bounties for users bringing software copycats to their attention, like it offers bounties for programmers bringing bugs to their attention, we might make some progress.

Nice catch, not exactly well publicized in our circles, but I did find the story from IGN and Polygon after some searching. The game wasn't a Wordle clone at first, but he's since added the original Wordle game as one of the game modes. I'm certain that the New York Times will want that removed at some point soon.

The charity donation was cool, and I'll add that to the story, but the fact that he pivoted to a Wordle clone to take advantage is still there, despite him going about it nicely.

"Seemingly apparent cases" that predate the thing it's supposedly a clone of?  How is Apple's review program (that I am no fan of) at fault there?

Very weird and confused article, was it written critically and then poorly updated after you found out that Wordle! was older?

Also, this was all reported weeks ago: https://www.pcgamer.com/older-game-called-wordle-hits-the-jackpot-creator-donates-the-windfall-to-charity/

Try reading it again. The game and name may have predated the popularity of the web game, but the App Store game later added a cloned version of Wardle's game. The donation story and everything is nice, but he still ended up adding a cloned game mode.

The other clones we pointed out are also an issue. How did they get through app review? How did the cloned version of Wordle he added as an app update get through app review?

The story still stands. Wordle clones are climbing the app store ranks, well intentioned developers or no.
