I always figured that everyone could hear all the communicators, that they were just a lot more respectful in the future.
When ST came out in the 60s, many saw it as a hope-filled sign that we as a species made it to the 23rd century.
Now I see it as na hope-filled sign that we as a species will eventually stop staring at our phones 24/7/365.
Star Trek:TNG is commonly misinterpreted to think we become the Federation.  We're actually the Borg.
Either way is a vast military dictatorship in which people are only valued by their contribution to the machine.
Tell me you don’t watch ST without telling me… The Federation is a multi-planetary alliance with a council governing body (think UN). Starfleet is their exploratory navy focused on science and exploration, with defensive armaments.
Bit of a blast from the past this thread.
Lower Decks makes fun of this all the time.

Fascinating. That would be so cool. I assume that everybody within earshot hears a ST communicator. In that environment, it wouldn't be unexpected and likely covered somewhere by protocol, written or unwritten.

In a world... Where people wander around others while loudly talking in to phones 'on speaker' held in their hands like serving trays, I appreciate that Apple would try to minimize its effect on others.

I doubt that a 'beam-formed' speaker would have sufficient directionality at a short range to be virtually silent or at least quiet and still be a viable transducer for the wearer. But if it worked... Fascinating.

I assume getting rid of Qualcomm modem is part of the research……… no point if they are still on board for the freebies.

But it takes long range commitment see link below and many false starts and many people/companies being told no you can’t do it stop, what are you doing? It takes too long only time will tell if Apple has that commitment. (Almost every inventor/researcher were told no, don’t waste our time).

Apple is probably redesigning from the ground up, kinda like redesigning Apple Silicon from the beginning (about 13 years and still going).

So Apple wants to flat out copy HUMANE now (ex Apple engineers)?

I don’t believe it. They have the watch.

This is likely to get money from others attempting to work in this space. May also be implemented somehow in future version of vision pro and Apple Watch.

As Apple has always said, they some times have to say no to very good ideas to focus on priority projects.

You don't think it more likely the Humane founders left Apple b/c Apple wouldn't/couldn't work on their idea? Thinking you may have the who copied who backward.
    Um… no.

If the idea started at Apple, it’s Apple’s.

Humane would be in some serious trouble if they actually did this without some written blessing from Apple.

More than likely some coworker friends talked about this during off hours and decided to make a go of it. Good on them. So t really see it taking off, but it’s still a cool effort.

Good imagination on your part though.

    What's next a tricorder?

Did you see the latest episode of Discovery? Retinal tricorder implants in the 32nd century. So yeah with Apple Vision I think they’re working on it
