Using a Retina imac as an external monitor for a macbook M1 air or macbook pro or MSI computer?
Is it doable? Nothing beats the retina screen. The macbook M1 is used for photo and video editing due to the chip and software. The macbook pro is used for regular internet browsing. The MSI is used for work that requires computer speed. I was thinking of purchasing an older imac retina and using it as a monitor for these devices...is it possible? Even a $1000 LG ultrafine monitor does not equate to the beauty, high ppi, and gloss, of the imac retina screens.

The LG Ultrafine 5K uses the same panel as the iMac does, so I'm not sure about "high ppi and gloss" statement. Alternatively, if you have an old one kicking around you can do a hardware mod on it.
