Apple lays off 100 recruiters as hiring becomes more 'deliberate'

Around 100 contractor recruiters have now been laid off at Apple, although an unknown number of others remain, as do the company's full-time recruitment workers.

Apple has recently been reported to be planning to slow down adding new staff. Tim Cook has directly said that he wouldn't characterize it as such, and instead says hiring will now be more "deliberate."

According to Business Standard, however, the company has now laid off some of its recruitment staff. Some 100 who were employed on a contract basis, have reportedly been laid off in the last week.

The 100 include recruiters based at Apple's offices in Texas and Singapore. Reportedly not all such contractors were laid off, and it appears that Apple is retaining all of its full-time recruiters.

Unnamed sources told the publication that workers had been informed cuts were being made due to changes in Apple's business needs. Contractors are reportedly to receive pay and medical benefits for two weeks.

It's a rare move for Apple, but not unprecedented. In 2016, the company laid off all of its contract recruiters.

These aren’t layoffs. They are contractors and their contracts are over according to the article. They aren’t being renewed but that comes with being a contractor.

Considering the amount of innovation coming out of Apple in the 00's with a much smaller staff and the rather meager results/staff member nowadays it's probably a good thing, if Apple starts to see things differently about growing like the crazy ones. The most creative ideas often come from lack of resources instead of abundance of resources.

It’s a completely different world today. If you go to their job listings you’ll see the vast majority of their jobs are standard IT fair — networking, devops, internal systems & tooling, etc. It takes a massive workforce to keep this world of cloud-connected services running. Same w/ EA — most of their jobs are not gaming development, they’re IT operations.

Apple’s hardware design studio is still famously small.

While true, I’ve been an IT contractor for decades and can vouch that most of IT contractors are merely an end-run of paying employment taxes & benefits for what are, really, staff. I’ve been at multiple Fortune 100 clients where we’re all contractors, for years on end. The customer brand absolutely does exert “behavior control” (IRS test) over this type of staff augmentation (staff aug), and it’s not at all like hiring a true contractor to build a deck or house where he sets his own schedule, ways of working, etc. It’s just a tax scam.

That’s for IT operations. I have no experience w/ recruitment, which in theory could be more true to contractor like experience, but who knows.

I fully agree.  Why on God's given earth would Apple sub contract - that's for not so competent companies.
