I hate adverts with a passion. I cannot think of a service I pay good money for that has adverts.
If there is a cheaper based advert subsidised version or a premium no ad version I’ll pay the money and get rid of the ads.
Part of the appeal of Apple’s products is that you pay one hell of a premium and part of that deal is that you get a better product.
Throwing in adverts after I’ve paid an eye watering premium is simply not on. Tim Cook should really think about this carefully, people like me who are very good and loyal customers will walk over shit like this.
I must be one of the vast majority of users who see ads as intrusive. I'm sure only a very small minority of users will buy what they're selling.
Why advertisers advertise is beyond me -- they do nothing but piss me off for making my attempt to read content difficult if not impossible.
If I were the writer of content, I would be none-to-pleased to have my cogent remarks interrupted by ads. On the other hand, if I get paid by the word, regardless of what crap put out, then these ads are what pays my bills.
So, Apple placing ads in Apple Maps turns Maps content into a mere vehicle for placing advertising.
Sadly it’s only a matter of time before Google Maps copies this. Soon they all will join Apple in this race to the bottom.
A few weeks ago Google Maps began doing the same sadly. I swear it looks more and more like the Apple/Google duopoly is running plans by each other.
At least for now you can turn the ads/pins off altogether when browsing the map, and disable targeted "sponsor-pins" when navigating but not the sponsor-pins and associated ads themselves. Note that these are different from the classic place-markers and they do look different on the map too appearing as a square box instead of an upside down teardrop.
Now saying that I have found those pins useful on a couple of occasions when traveling to an unfamiliar destination. They don't bother me enough to want to see them gone, but definitely prefer my display to be uncluttered.
What I don't like seeing is Apple mimicking Google and moving into user tracking and personalized ads with greater fervor.
Why would Apple do this? It is not as if they need the money. It reminds me of SJ and JI's mantra about the great design comes from how and when to say no. I understand that it costs a small fortune to provide maps and live directions etc, but isn't that marketing? In order to sell the best devices for a high price Apple provides great software and services? I agree with above that this could be a starting point and that One+ or whatever removes the ads. Common for a lot of smaller apps for understandable reasons, but a cheap shot by Apple. Ugh!
Screw this. I get more than enough useless obnoxious ads. And if I don’t use Apple Maps, I don’t need to replace my Apple Watch 4. Bite yoir nose to spite your face, clowns. I remember when Apple made innovative stuff that didn’t break even more with every asinine “upgrade.” They think they’re big enough to coast on their rep. So did Sears.
This kind of shit is why Cook needs to go. Unlike Jobs, who was laser focussed on customer experience and satisfaction, he's laser focussed on profit above all. That makes a Microsoft, not an Apple.

In app advertising is the best way to lose users. I thought Apple knew that but times must be tough. Can’t wait for new advertising blocker apps.
How would that work since Apple controls all apps that are allowed to run on a person’s iPhone?
Apple doesn't control my Unraid server running pihole ad blocker. My router routes all my traffic through there, so ad URLs are blocked in my entire house for everyone using my network. I personally also have all my phone traffic running through there even when I'm outside my personal network, so even out in public I don't see ads. Once in a while a new URL pops up, but the block list is easy to update.

As to advertising in general: no, yuck, ewww, spit ...
A very quick way to lose my patronage.
